엄청난 재앙을 겪고 모든 것이 사라진 뒤, 남는 것이 ‘희망’ 뿐이라면, 과연 무엇이 ‘희망’일 수 있는가? 소노 시온의 는 아무런 희망이 없는 곳에서 ‘희망’을 찾는 이야기를 그리고 있다. 나가시마현의 오하라 마을. 목축업을 하는 요이치는 아내 이즈미,그리고 부모님과 함께 살고 있다. 어느 날, 대지진이 발생하고 인근의 원자력발전소가 파괴되면서 방사능이 누출된다. 정부는 경계선을 그어 방사능의 영향권에 있는 지역 주민들에게 대피령을 내린다. 요이치의 집은 경계선의 중간에 위치해 있다. 하지만 요이치의 아버지는 치매에 걸린 어머니와 그곳에 남기로 한다. 그리고 그들은 완전히 고립된 삶을 산다. 그런데 안전지역으로 이주한 요이치 부부는 불안한 삶을 이어가는 반면 아버지와 어머니는 평온하기 그지없다. 하지만 사람들이 완전히 사라진 오하라 마을의 그로테스크한 모습은 마치 종말 이후의 지구의 모습을 보는 듯 하다. 그래서, 그들이 찾는 것은 사실 ‘희망’이 아니라 ‘위안’이다. 즉, ‘같이 있다는 것’ 그리고 ‘같이 죽는다는 것’이 그것이다. 영화제목 는 너무나 역설적이다. Set in a declining coal-mining town in 1950s Fukuoka, the story depicts a rambunctious but pure-hearted young boy in love with an older woman. Director Hirayama Hideyuki and writer Chong Wishing, both from Begging for Love (Ai o kou hito), join hands again to make this film. Michiyo (Koyuki) has left Tokyo for Fukuoka with her son Mamoru (Ikematsu Sosuke) after divorcing her husband. The story follows Mamoru's memories of his time spent with the notorious rebel Shinichi (Ishida Takuya), who stood up for him against bullies.

Nobuo insists on the presence of Ryoichi, his elder son whom he hasn't seen for a long time. Nobuo and his two sons, along with their partners, gather for the commemoration. Unspoken feelings resurface and clash with each other.
