타이지는 어머니로부터 학대 받은 경험이 트라우마로 남아 수년째 소원하게 지내지만 친구들의 격려를 받고 어머니와의 화해를 통해 불행했던 과거를 청산하기로 결심한다. 시간을 거슬러 올라가면 어린 시절 타이지는 뚱뚱하다고 구박 받으면서도 아름다운 어머니의 애정을 갈구하고, 아버지는 대놓고 바람을 피고 있으며, 누나는 타이지에게 가해지는 어머니의 폭언과 폭력을 못 본체 외면한다. 타이지가 기댈 수 있는 곳은 어머니의 학대를 막으려 애쓰며 감싸주는 할머니 같은 유모뿐이다. 우타가와 타이지의 자전적인 베스트셀러 만화를 바탕으로, 미노리카와 오사무 감독은 어둡고 충격적인 주제를 너무 무겁지 않게, 또 너무 가볍지도 않게 탁월한 균형 감각을 보이며 연출력을 과시한다. 그러나 무엇보다 주목할 것은 타이지의 어머니 미츠코 역할을 맡아 미움과 애처로움의 양가 감정을 끌어내는 요시다 요의 눈부신 연기력이다. Naive office girl Yuko supports her blithe big city lifestyle with a part-time job at a neighborhood cafe.
