6월 6일 오전 6시, 로마의 한 병원. 미국의 젊은 외교관 로버트 쏜은 아이가 태어나자마자 죽었다는 소식을 듣고 병원으로 달려온다. 이미 두 번의 유산경험이 있는 사랑하는 아내 캐서린에게 유산사실을 말하지 못하고 괴로워하는 로버트. 그때 한 신부가 같은 시각 태어난 아기를 입양할 것을 제안한다. 그 아기의 엄마가 죽었다는 말과 함께. 로버트는 그 아기를 데려와 아내에게 친아들이라고 말한다. 그리고 ‘데미안’이라는 이름을 붙이고 부족함없는 사랑을 주며 키운다. 단란한 가정과 함께 로버트는 직업적으로도 승승장구한다. 미국을 대표하는 영국 대사로 발령받게 되는 것. 이제 쏜 가족은 영국 근교의 영지에 정착한다. 그러나, 모든 것이 완벽한 이 가정에 어둠의 기운이 감돌기 시작한다. 그 첫번째는 데미안의 5번째 생일파티장에서 벌어진다. 데미안의 유모가 건물 옥상에 목매달아 자살하는 사건이 발생한 것. 이 사건 이후 로버트는 낯선 신부의 방문을 받고 끔찍한 말을 전해 듣는다. 데미안이 악마의 자식이라는 것. 로버트는 신부의 말을 무시하지만 자신 역시 무엇인가 잘못되었음을 감지한다. 그즈음 데미안에게 새로운 유모 베이록 부인이 고용된다. 데미안에게 모든 것을 바쳐 헌신하는 그녀. 하지만 그녀의 등장 이후, 어둠의 징후는 더욱 또렷이 나타난다. 동물원에서의 기이한 현상들, 교회에서 보여준 데미안의 히스테리 등. 그러나 이 모든 것은 시작에 불과했다…

후방 지휘본부에서 편안하게 근무하던 스물네 살의 미군 장교 토머스 하트 중위는 1944년 12월 16일, 갑작스런 사고에 휘말린다. 아군으로 위장한 독일군의 공격을 받아 포로가 되고 만 것. 3일간의 고문을 견디지 못하고 작전 기밀을 털어놓은 하트는 독일군 포로수용소 ‘스타라크 6’에 입소한다. 이곳에서 그는 아군 포로들을 지휘하고 있는 맥나마라 대령을 만난다. 어느 날 흑인 장교 포로 두 명이 수용소에 들어오면서 아군들 사이에 인종적 갈등이 생기고 급기야 두 명의 포로가 죽는 사고가 발생한다. 맥나마라는 진범을 가리기 위해 수용소장 베르너 비서 대령에게 재판을 요구하고 하트는 혐의를 받고 있는 흑인 중위 링컨 스콧을 변호한다. 하지만 며칠 뒤 하트는 이 재판이 거대한 위장이었음을 알게 된다.

{중세시대(dedieval times), 스포츠(sport)가 생겨났다. 귀족 기사들만 서로 싸울 수 있었고, 농부들은 그들의 팬이였다. 그 스포츠는 바로 마상 창시합(jousting)이었다. 이런 기사들 가운데, 모두를 이긴 챔피언은 그걸로 끝이지만, 그러나 그의 수하 농부(peasant squire) 윌리엄에게는 그건 단지 시작일 뿐이였다.} 14세기 유럽, 가난한 지붕 수리공의 아들, 윌리엄(헤스 레저 분)은 자신이 주인으로 모시던 기사가 어느날 마창 대회 도중 심장마비로 죽은 것을 발견한다. 어릴 적부터 기사가 꿈이었던 그는 귀족들에게만 참가 자격이 있던 대회의 규칙상 신분을 속이고 얼떨결에 대회에 참가해 우승을 하게 된다. 이때부터 자신을 지지하는 동료 롤랜드(Roland: 마크 애디 분), 와트(Wat: 알란 튜딕 분)와 더불어 창술과 마창 등 담력을 겨루는 혹독한 훈련에 돌입한 윌리엄. 도중에 시인이라 자칭하는 도박꾼 초서(Geoffrey Chaucer: 폴 베타니 분)까지 합세해 기사 울리히로 게재 된 가짜 기사 신분 증명서까지 만들고 대회가 열리는 도시를 찾아 대장정을 시작한다. 결투는 승승장구. 그는 세상의 모든 사람들에게 영웅이란 칭호를 받으며 인기와 찬사를 한몸에 받는다. 한편 윌리엄은 대회 중간 관중으로 참석한 아름다운 흑발의 여성 죠슬린(Jocelyn: 샤닌 소사먼 분)에게 한눈에 반하게 되고 그녀가 상류귀족의 신분을 가졌음을 알게 된다. 윌리엄을 진짜 기사 울리히로 알고 있는 조슬린 또한 그의 천진함과 남자다운 기개에 점점 끌리게 되는데..

1847년의 아메리카. 개척과 야욕의 시대에 일확천금을 꿈꾸는 사람들은 금광을 캐기 위해 서쪽으로 영역을 넓혀가면서 전쟁을 일으키고 미국은 곳곳에서 살인과 약탈이 빈번한 암흑의 세월을 맞는다. 미국과 멕시코간에 벌어진 전쟁에서 존 대위는 전방의 한 전투지에서 그의 대원들과 고립된다. 존과 대원들은 네바다 산맥의 추위와 허기에 시달리고 있을 즈음, 어느날 정체 불명의 사나이 콘 혼이 그들의 기지로 찾아온다. 대원들은 콘 혼과 함께 식량 조달을 위한 여행에 그를 동참시키지만, 동료가 흘리는 피를 보는 콘 홀의 반응이 심상치 않음을 느낀다. 이를 의심한 대원들은 콜 혼의 결박하고 그가 생활했던 동굴을 찾아간다. 조사중 동굴 속에서 사람들의 시체와 식인의 흔적을 본 존 대위는 경악하고 동굴밖으로 나오지만 이미 콘 혼의 손에 대원 모두가 생명을 잃은 후다. 죽음의 위기를 넘기고 가까스로 콜 혼의 손아귀로 부터 빠져나온 존은 마을에 도착하고 몇일동안 계속해서 사람의 생살을 먹는 콜의 악몽에 시달린다. 그러던 어느 날 새로운 사령관이 부임해오고 그를 맞으러 나간 존은 새로운 대위가 바로 살인마 콜이라는 것을 알고 경악하는데...

흰눈이 내린 추운 겨울, 젊은 기관사 혼자는 들뜬 맘으로 기차역으로 향한다. 오늘은 그가 처음 기차의 운전대를 잡는 날이기 때문이다. 영화는 혼자의 조금은 특별한 일상을 보여주는 한편 그가 오고 가며 만나는 다양한 개성의 사람들을 생동감 넘치게 그린다. ‘재앙’조차 일상의 연장선 안에서 그리는 베라 히틸로바의 활기찬 시선이 돋보인다.

A West German businessman Friedrich Schmidt is arriving to Czechoslovakia with private mission and mission for Intelligence service. He wants to settle the old event from the time of the Second World War when he as a student of the Czech grammar school in the town of Kostelec took part at the denunciation of his schoolmate Pavel Richter. Pavel was during the period of Nazi terror following the assassination of Acting Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia Heydrich executed. Schmidt has also to enter into relations with persons suitable for cooperation with the West Intelligence service. Schmidt - earlier, before the German occupation Smíd - meets the schoolmates and endeavors to avert suspicion that arose already at the time of the tragic event.

To Moscow have arrived the participants of the international conference of the zoophilologists and also the international jury which is to elect for the world festival the best performance of the program of Moscow circus. Mrs Whistler (Iva Janzurová), British associate professor, makes her understood with the animals in their language but the Czech professor Ruzicka (Jirí Sovák), though he is capable of using the animals language, prefers teaching the animals the human language. Ruzicka's friend, the poodle Archibald, speaks "in Human" very well. The scientific dispute ends with a bet - if Ruzicka teaches the circus elephant to sing, Mrs Whistler will eat up her hat.

After returning home from the army, Vasek (Ladislav Potmesil) has married Bozka (Eva Trejtnarová) and the couple now live at her parents' house. Vasek is unhappy both with his work and with sharing the house with Bozka's parents. He and his friend Ruda (Oldrich Vlach) decide to take a temporary job in Ostrava for a year. Bozka is against this, but Vasek gets his way. Mining is hard work but Vasek gradually adapts to it. He gets homesick from time to time and wants to go back, but his pride always wins out. Once he really does travel back to see Bozka, but he doesn't find her at home.

When a comet passes the Earth very closely, it pulls a small part of North Africa, and a small swathe of humanity, along with it.
