Leland "Lee" Zavitz (August 20, 1904– June 2, 1977) was a special effects technician. He was born in Mount Vernon, Washington. His first major impact was for his work on John Ford's 1937 film, The Hurricane. Zavitz's work on the 1950 space fantasy film Destination Moon won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. He also worked on films such as Around the World in Eighty Days (1956), The Alamo (1960), Sodom and Gomorrah (1963), The Pink Panther (1963) and John Frankenheimer's The Train (1964). His last film was Sydney Pollack's wartime chiller Castle Keep in 1969.
Zavitz held patents on several devices used in his film work, including fog machines, rain bombs, an exploding wagon and "a lightning torch that can be seen for 50 miles."

무대는 핵전쟁이 끝난 이후의 호주, 세계는 방사능에 오염되어 있고, 그속에서도 인간의 애증과 갈등의 관계들은 여전하다. 그 중 가장 인상적인 대목이 바로 어딘가에서 발신되는 모르스 신호를 추적해 가는 미해군 잠수함 승무원들의 모습이다. 그 신호는 분명히 방사능으로 전멸해버린 도시에서 나오고 있다. 혹시 그곳에 생존자가 있어서 그 신호를 발신하고 있다면, 인류의 생존가능성을 찾을 수 있으리라는 마지막 기대를 가지고 그들은 출항한다. 방사능을 피해서 잠수 상태로 항해하여 육중한 보호복을 입고서 그들이 도달한 곳에는 사람의 흔적은 없고 모르스 발신기에 무언가가 걸려서 바람에 흔들리며 불규칙적인 신호를 내고 있었다. 텅빈 대도시에서 느껴지는 그 엄청난 무게의 절망감. 그 이상의 메시지가 어디 있을까? 라스트 씬은 어떤가? 잠수함의 승무원들은 모여서 논란을 벌인 끝에 결정을 내린다. 어차피 죽을거라면, 사랑하는 가족들이 숨진 고향에 가서 죽겠노라고. 그 '고향'을 향해 잠수함은 출항을 한다.

Set just after the American civil war, businessman and inventor Victor Barbicane invents a new source of power called Power X. He plans to use it to power rockets, and to show its potential he plans to send a projectile to the moon. Joining him for the trip are his assistant Ben Sharpe, Barbicane's arch-rival Stuyvesant Nicholl, and Nicholl's daughter Virginia. Nicholl believes that Power X goes against the will of God and sabotages the projectile so that they cannot return to earth, setting up a suspenseful finale as they battle to repair the projectile.
