런던에서 노숙자로 살아가는 토마스는 군인으로 복무하는 동안 생긴 외상후 스트레스 장애(PTSD)를 앓고 있다. 어느 날, 친절한 수녀 한 분이 토마스에게 외딴 곳에 있는 낡은 집에 상주하는 관리인 자리를 제안한다. 그 낡은 집에는 젊은 여성 마그다와 생사가 오락가락하는 마그다의 어머니가 고립된 채 살고 있다. 그 집에 정착하면서, 토머스는 마그다에게 로맨틱한 감정을 느끼게 되지만, 이 고립된 집에서 뭔가 불길한 일이 일어나고 있다는 느낌과, 그곳을 떠나기에는 이미 너무 늦었다는 생각 사이에서 갈팡질팡한다.
