월남 전쟁이 시작될 무렵이 1963년 초 미국 해군의 엘리트 장교인 패트릭 윌리엄슨은 월남전 참여에 대한 확신으로 가득 차 월남전에 참전하나 작전 도중 비행기 사고로 베트콩의 포로가 되어 하노이 변방에 있는 수용소에 갇힌다. 거기 소장인 캣소령은 그를 포로 취급을 하지 않고 전범 취급을 하려 한다. 그 수용소에서 온갖 학대와 외로움을 겪던 윌리엄슨은 1년여 만에 다른 미군 포로들이 들어오자 나름대로 힘을 얻는다. 미군 포로들 숫자가 늘어남에 따라 이들을 정치적 선전 도구로 이용하려는 캣 소장의 공작은 더욱 심해진다. 그의 목적은 미국인 포로들로 하여금 미국은 악하고 온갖 범죄를 저지르는 자들이라는 것을 고백하게 하여 국제 여론을 유리하게 이끌려는 속셈이다. 그러나 포로들은 온갖 협박과 조기 석방이라는 달콤한 유혹에도 굽히지 않고 미군 장교들로서의 자존심을 지키며 끝까지 투쟁한다. 그러나 쿠바인 고문관의 횡포, 미국 언론들의 약팍한 상술에 배신감과 좌절의 골만 깊어지며 희생자만 하나씩 늘어간다. 그러나 끝까지 버틴 포로들은 마침내 9년만에 전쟁이 종결로 치달아감에 따라, 기다리던 본국 송환의 꿈을 달성하나 그 대가는 너무도 처절한 것이었다.
