야간열차를 타고 ‘헬싱키’로 향하던 중년의 ‘남자’는 마을에 도착한 첫날, 공원 벤치에 앉아 잠시 쉬던 중 자신의 인생을 송두리째 바꿔놓을 사고를 당한다. 소지품은 물론 신분증하나 없는 맨 몸으로 병원으로 실려간 이름 없는 ‘남자’는 생명이 위험한 상태. 오전 5시 12분. 온몸이 붕대에 휘감겨진 ‘남자’는 결국 사망선고를 받는다. 그러나 의사들이 자리를 비운 사이, 의식을 회복한 ‘남자는 무작정 병원을 나오는데... 직업도, 돈도, 그리고 기억마저 없는 ‘남자’는 병원에서 나온 뒤 인적 드문 길가에서 정신을 잃는다. 그가 도착한 곳은 거리의 부랑아들과 가난한 이웃들이 함께 살아가는 마을. ‘남자’는 마을의 가난한 이웃들을 도우며 사는 구세군의 여인 ‘이루마’를 만나 그녀와 사랑에 빠진다. 그리고 이루마와의 사랑을 통해 점차 활기차게 변해간다. 여전히 아무것도 기억하지 못하지만, 그에게는 새로운 인생이 시작되는데...

Joulubileet (The Christmas Party) might well be the closest to the ultimate cult movie that the Finnish film industry has ever gotten. The third directorial effort of Jari Halonen, a clearly distinctive voice in the local filmmaking landscape, is a timeless, absurd and at times completely insane piece of masculine comedy rough not only on the edges, but to the core. A story of Mike, just out of prison, and his buddies throwing a Christmas party under the most obscure circumstances is filled with juicy dialogue and plot twists that will definitely make your jaw drop – and have you chuckle for days after.

A lawyer pays a visit to Matti Ojanperä (Matti Pellonpää), a bum living under a bridge in the Helsinki harbour, to inform him that he is about to inherit an American aunt of his. The sum 1,000,000 Fmk would be his, if only he meets the qualifications set by his aunt. He must show that he is capable of 'living properly' and possessing a 'respectable occupation and a family he can support'. Otherwise the money would go to a foundation the chairman of which the lawyer himself happens to be!

주인공 카스리넨은 광부다. 일하던 탄광이 폐광이 되며 도산을 하고 사장은 유일하게 남은 것은 권총과 승용차 한대. 차 키를 카스리넨에게 주고 자신은 권콩으로 자살을 한다. 실업자가 되어 달랑 차 한 대만 끌고 도시로 온 그는 주차 단속을 하던 필라야와 너무 쉽게 잠을 자고 곧 동거를 시작하는데 그들의 필요 충분 조건은 사랑뿐 이었을 뿐이다. 그녀에겐 딸린 아들도 있다. 가진 것 없고 사랑만 있는 이들 앞엔 역경만 닥쳐오고 결국 갖은 우여곡절 끝에 그들은 현실을 도피해 밀항선을 타고 꿈의 땅 아리엘로 떠난다.
