도쿄의 작고 아름다운 마을 키치조지에 사는 유명 순정만화가 아사코(코이즈미 쿄코)는 어느 겨울날, 13년간을 함께 해온 고양이 ‘사바’를 잃게 된다. 큰 슬픔에 빠진 그녀는 더 이상 작품활동을 하지 못하게 되고, 나오미(우에노 쥬리)를 비롯한 3인조 어시스턴트들의 걱정은 커져만 간다. 그러던 어느 날, 용기를 내 찾아간 펫샵에서 3개월 된 아메리칸 숏트 헤어종의 새끼고양이를 운명처럼 만나게 된 아사코. 그녀는 그 고양이에게 ‘구구’라는 이름을 지어준다. 구구와 함께 밥을 먹고 잠을 자며 차츰 안정을 되찾는 아사코는 어느 날, 사라진 구구를 찾으러 나갔다가 미스터리한 연하의 청년 세이지(카세 료)를 만나게 된다. 오랜만에 느껴보는 가슴 설레임에 두근거리던 아사코. 두 사람은 천천히 가까워지고, 즐거워지는 생활 속에 아사코는 급기야 새로운 작품을 시작하게 된다. 모든 것이 더할 나위 없이 순조로운 어느 날, 아사코에게 생각지도 못한 일이 일어나는데…

The Rinkaiji family, by all appearances, is a well-to-do Japanese family. The father, Nariyuki, works in an elite corporation, which gives his wife Yoshiko status in their suburban neighborhood. But the daughter Sugina, who herself has secretly stopped going to school because she is being bullied. One day, they discover that Nariyuki has quit his job. Although his mother is allergic to cats and has a great fear of them, she agrees to let him keep the kitten because she fears he is becoming too withdrawn after failing his university entrance exams. Chibi-neko soon falls in love with Tokio. In her own mind, Chibi-neko is a small human who speaks in human words, although people only ever seem to hear her meow, and she believes that all humans were once kittens like her. A stray cat tells Chibi-neko of a paradise called Cottonland, where dreams can come true.
