서기 23세기. 세티 알파 5호 행성 근처에서 렐리언트호가 미세한 생명체의 움직임을 포착한다. 이에 확인 차 행성에 내려간 체코프 항해사와 테렐 함장은 그만 칸에게 포로로 잡힌다. 커크 제독(윌리엄 샤트너 분)에 의해 추방당했던 칸은 오랜 세월동안 복수의 기회만 노리고 있었던 인물. 렐리언트호를 탈취한 칸은 새로운 생명체를 창조할 수 있는, 일명 제네시스라고 불리는 기계를 탈취하기 위해 과학선 레귤라 1호로 향한다. 한편, 생도들의 처녀항해를 지켜보기 위해 엔터프라이즈호에 탑승해있던 커크 제독은 레귤라 1호의 캐롤박사로부터 의문의 메시지를 받는다. 이에 커크 제독은 제네시스 계획을 확인하고 초고속으로 레귤라 1호가 있는 곳으로 향한다. 하지만 이미 그 곳은 칸이 길목을 지키고 있었고, 렐리언트호를 전혀 의심하지 않았던 커크 제독은 칸에게 일격을 당하고 마는데...
잡지 기자이지만 도박을 즐기는 빌과 삼류 도박꾼 찰리는 한 도박클럽에서 만나게 되고, 둘은 함께 시간을 보내면서 점점 가까워지는 것은 물론 빌은 찰리의 삶을 흡수하게 된다. 도박을 하면 할수록 빌의 빚을 늘어나고, 그는 더 큰 돈을 따기 위해 찰리와 함께 리노로 향한다.
극 중에서 빌이 찰리에게 카지노와 경마장이 같은 선상에 있다고 이야기하듯이, 은 알트만 감독이 보여주고자 하는 제어되지 않은 혼돈의 세계를 다루고 있다. 알트만 감독의 다른 작품에 비해 비교적 덜 알려진 이 버디 무비는 과 함께 폴 토마스 앤더슨 감독의 의 호아킨 피닉스와 조슈 브롤린을 연상시킨다. (2016년 한국영상자료원)
The U.S. submarine Anthony Wayne is underway for a top-secret mission. Onboard is a highly classified device that will give the Americans a decided nuclear advantage. The entire mission and the secret technology are threatened when the sub commander discovers his crew has been infiltrated by enemy agents. The commander is charged with trying to protect the device while ferreting out the enemy agents. Compounding matters is the state of the commander's physical and mental condition, which is being questioned by his crew.
In 1960, the ruins of an American bomber were found in the Libyan desert, but the remains of the crew were never located. In Guerdon Trueblood's teleplay, the ghosts of a bomber crew hang around their derelict plane, awaiting the day that their bones will be recovered and given a decent burial. The sole survivor, navigator Russell Hamner, has in the intervening 25 years become a General. He joins an investigation team that has come across the wreckage, while the ghosts, headed by Major Devlin, plot to expose Hamner as a coward who deserted his post and left his crew mates to die.
