금주법시대인 1932년 뉴욕. 사기꾼인 레이(에디 머피)와 고지식한 은행출납원 클라우드(마틴 로렌스)는 악당 프랭키에게 빚진 돈을 갚기 위하여 밀주 수입 일을 하게 된다. 미시시피로 떠난 두 사람은 계획대로 밀주를 구입하고 인근 술집에 들어간다. 레이는 술집에서 벌어진 도박판에 끼어들고 재수없게 걸려든 사기도박에 말려들어 가진 돈을 모두 털리게 된다. 두 사람은 잃은 돈을 찾기 위해 사기 도박단을 찾아 헤매지만 설상가상으로 지역보안관의 계략에 말려들어 억울하게 살인누명을 쓰고 65년이라는 종신형을 선고받아 미시시피 주립 형무소에 갇힌다. 우여곡절 끝에 그들의 억울한 생활은 시작되고 성격이 상반되는 두 사람은 좌충우돌 많은 해프닝을 벌이는데...
