Four old friends - Kamil, Lesha, Sasha and Slava - all well-to-do professionals in their late 30s embarking on a two days road trip from Moscow to Odessa. 때는 2005년. 빠르고 격렬한 스포츠 광인 조너던(크리스 클라인)은 알렉스(장 르노)로 부터 새로운 팀에 합류해 달라는 제의를 받는다. 알렉스가 개발한 신종 게임의 이름은 롤러볼. 롤러 블레이드와 모터 사이클을 탄 선수들이 지름 15센티미터의 금속 공을 골대에 집어넣는 경기다. 거친 몸싸움 속에 부상자와 사상자가 속출하는 가운데 조너던은 알렉스의 속셈을 눈치챈다. 경기가 격렬해질수록 관중이 더 많이 몰린다는 사실을 간파하고 선수들을 위험헤 빠뜨리고 있다는 것. 이제 조너던과 팀원들은 살아남기 위해 마지막 필사의 생존게임을 준비한다.

전쟁영웅 데닐라는 우연한 기회에 TV 프로그램에 출연했다가 연락이 끊어졌던 옛 전우를 만나게 된다. 아이스 하키 선수가 된 친구는 미국 프로 아이스하키 팀의 황금 같은 스카우트 제의를 받아놓고 있는 상태. 그러나 얼마 후 잔인하게 살인된 채 변사체로 발견된다. 의문의 죽음을 당한 친구의 복수를 결심한 데닐라는 친구의 죽음이 소련 마피아와 연루되었다는 사실을 알게 된다. 더욱 엄청난 사실은 마피아 일당들이 여자들을 납치한 후 스너프 필름을 찍어 미국에 팔아넘기고 있다는 것. 게다가 친구의 죽음은 미국 마피아와도 관계되어 있다는 사실을 알게된다. 우여곡절 끝에 러시아 마피아를 급습하고 그들을 일망타진한 데닐라는 앞으로 혼자 힘으로 사건을 해결하기 어렵다는 사실을 깨닫고 자신의 형에게 구원 요청을 하게 된다. 영어 한 마디 못하는 두 형제가 벌이는 미국 마피아 소탕작전은 시작되고, 사건은 시간이 지날수록 꼬이고 꼬인다. 각자 흩어져 마피아 일당을 찾기로 한 형제. 형은 경찰을 죽인 도망자 신세로, 시카고로 향하던 데닐라는 러시아 창녀와 우연한 만남으로 끝을 알 수 없는 상황으로 치닫게 된다. 약속한 날, 시카고에서 만나기로 한 두 형제의 변화된 모습에서 드러나는 것은 미국으로 대변되는 자본주의 사화에 대한 풍자라는 감독의 의도이다.(2000년 제4회 부천국제판타스틱영화제/조세진)

뉴욕의 법대생인 마이크(맷 데이먼 분)는 포커 실력이 프로급이다. 그러나 마이크의 여자친구 조(그레첸 몰 분)는 마이크가 도박판을 전전하는 것을 싫어한다. 이런 두 사람의 관계는 마이크의 고등학교 동창인 웜(에드워드 노튼 분)이 출감하면서 금이 가기 시작한다. 러시아 마피아와 줄이 닿아있는 테디 KGB(존 말코비치 분)에게 등록금 3만 달러를 모두 날린 후로 다시는 포커를 하지 않겠다고 다짐했던 마이크는 웜과 어울리면서 다시 도박의 유혹을 느끼기 시작한다. 한편 웜은 감옥에 가기 전에 졌던 만 5천 달러의 도박빚 때문에 목숨을 잃을 수 있는 위기에 처한다. 이에 마이크는 웜과 짜고 포커판을 돌며 빚을 갚을 돈을 모으기 시작한다.
