유명한 페미니즘 작가인 안젤라 카터가 성의 정치학이라는 측면에서 재구성한 동명의 단편 모음집을 각색한 작품이다. 안젤라 카터의 동화는 이미 라디오 극으로 각색된 적이 있는데, 이 라디오 극이 보다 직접적으로 영화에 영향을 끼친 것으로 알려져 있다. 안젤라 카터는 '마술적 리얼리즘 작가'이라는 표현에 걸맞게 현실과 환상의 모호환 경계를 오가는 필체와 상상력으로 유명한데, 기본적으로 난해한 액자구성으로 진행되는 [늑대의 혈족]의 내용을 축약하기란 쉬운 일이 아니다. 현실의 소녀가 붉은 망토 소녀에 관한 꿈을 꾸는데, 그 꿈속에서 또 다른 이야기가 진행되는 복잡한 구조를 지니고 있다. 어찌됐든 이야기의 기본 틀은 유명한 구전동화인 "붉은 망토"를 기본으로 하고 있다. "붉은 망토(붉은 모자)"는 그림 형제 버전을 포함해서 여러 형태로 각색되어 있지만, 안젤라 카터는 이를 최초로 문자로 기록한 샤를 페로의 이야기를 직접적으로 모티브를 삼는다. 그것은 바로 길에서 만난 신사를 조심하라는 고전적 교훈극에 대한 페미니즘적 시각이다. 영화전체에 일관되게 유지되는 정서 또한 소녀의 성적 호기심과 관련된 여러 은유적인 암시들이다. 초, 중반에 붉은 망토 소녀는 부모의 잠자리를 엿보고 출산에 대한 호기심을 암시적으로 드러내는데, 후반부에 이르면 자신을 외딴 길로 유인하기 위해 혈안이 되어있던 또래의 소년을 거부하더니 길에서 만남 낯선 남자의 노골적인 유혹엔 암묵적으로 동의한다. 특히 후자의 경우엔 안젤라 카터가 말하고자 하는 원작의 핵심요소인 소녀의 성적 욕망이 직접적으로 표현된 부분이다. 영화의 엔딩은 논리적으로 해석되지 않는다. 하지만 이런 모호함이야 말고 [늑대의 혈족]의 핵심 요소라 할 수 있다. 일반적인 늑대인간 영화를 기대하는 관객들에게는 실망감을 안겨줄 테니, 독특한 분위기의 고딕 동화에 관심이 있는 관객들에겐 좀 더 추천하고 싶은 작품이다.

The brutally entitled Don't Be Like Brenda (1973) is an eight-minute lecture to young women, telling them not to be sexually promiscuous like the film's hapless heroine – although heaven knows, the promiscuity hinted at here is tragically modest. Poor Brenda goes all the way with a boy who does not marry her. The film is stunningly without any useful educational content on contraception and makes it entirely clear that the woman, not the man, is to blame. The film even makes her poor unwanted child suffer from a heart defect, so that no one wants to adopt the poor little thing – just to hammer the point home.
