At the Johnson's house in the country, a female mouse named Emily, whose existence is known to two children named Patty and Kevin living there, decides to go into the city to visit her cousin Alexander for Christmas. However, the chef the restaurant Alexander lives in has set a variety of anti-mice precautions, thus scaring the two cousins out of the restaurant. The two mice return to the country house to celebrate Christmas together.

고물상을 하는 행크와 여행사를 하는 프래니. 이 둘은 5년 간을 같이 살아온 사이로 갑갑하고 지루한 일상을 탈피하고 싶어하지만 그것도 마음뿐 현실에서는 그 소망을 포기한 채 살아간다. 그렇게 살아오면서 어느덧 서로에 대한 애정도 식고 이들은 마침내 큰 말싸움 끝에 헤어진다. 프래니는 라스베가스의 식당에서 피아노를 치며 노래를 부르는 레이를 만나 그 동안 자신이 꿈꿔왔던 여행을 계획한다. 행크 역시 서커스를 하는 라일라를 만나 사랑을 나누지만 행크의 머리 속에서는 프래니가 떠나가질 않는다. 자신이 진실로 사랑하는 여자는 프래니임을 깨달은 행크는 레이와 함께 있는 프래니를 강제로 끌고 나오지만 프래니의 결심은 굳은 듯 보인다. 행크는 포기하지 않고 레이와 함께 떠나려는 프래니를 공항까지 따라가 설득해 보지만 프래니는 이를 외면하고 결국은 떠난다. 혼자 집으로 돌아온 행크는 낙심하여 프래니의 물건을 태우려 하는데 그 순간 프래니가 집으로 돌아온다.
