1936년, 눈이 깊은 북국(北国)의 어느 산골 마을. 10살인 하라다 소타(原田草太, 모리모토 신타로)는 어려서 부모님을 여의고 할아버지와 단둘이 살고 있다. 가난한 탓에 학교에 다닐 수 없는 소타였지만 너무나 좋아하는 그림을 그리는 꿈을 목표로 씩씩하고 솔직한 소년으로 자랐다. 그런 소타와 가장 친한 사람은 마을에서 가장 부자집에서 태어난 소꼽친구 아리마 사요(有馬早代, 구와시마 마리노)였다. 그러던 어느 날, 소타와 사요는 어미를 잃은 강아지를 발견하고 치비(チビ)라는 이름을 붙여주고 기르기 시작한다. 언제나처럼 숯을 창고까지 운반하던 쇼타는 돌아오는 길에 마을을 찾은 서커스 전단지를 보게 된다. 그런데 이상하게도 할아버지는 완강하게 서커스 구경을 반대한다. 하지만 호기심을 이기지 못하고 서커스단 천막에 숨어든 쇼타는 그곳에서 다정한 피에로(아사노 타다노부)를 만난다. 그에게 그림에 대한 얘기를 털어놓자 피에로는 쇼타에게 그림도구를 선물하고 쇼타는 그것을 사용해 그림 콩쿠르에 출전하기 위해 그림을 그리기로 한다. 소타를 지켜주는 피에로의 정체는 사실 소타의 아버지로, 서커스를 하기 위해 소타와 아내를 버렸던 것이다. 소타는 그 사실을 알지 못했다. 그리고 소타가 그림을 다 완성한 날 아침. 할아버지가 갑자기 쓰러져 세상을 떠난다. 큰 슬픔에 빠진 소타는 피에로를 만나러 서커스단을 찾는데 텐트도 피에로도 떠나고 없었다. 소타와 치비는 그림을 제출하러 길을 나서지만 제대로 먹지 못해 정신이 없다. 돌아오는 길에 사요를 만나러 가지만 사요의 아버지 마사미츠(政光, 카가와 테루유키)로부터 다시는 딸과 만나지 말라는 얘기를 듣고 만다.

In 1943, as Japan's WWII effort falters, a vice-admiral proposes training squadrons of "volunteer" flyers to crash their armed planes into Allied warships. Yarn follows the lives of kamikaze pilots, as remembered by an aging Kyushu restaurateur who cherishes their memory. Honoring the dead and multiple military anthems may stir the soul of some Japanese, but elsewhere auds will make a one-way trip for exits. Battle scenes are well-executed and script delivers some memorable scenes, but overall competent helming and thesping are powerless over writer-cum-Tokyo governor Shintaro Ishiara's repetitive storytelling. A post-war postscript adds considerable length to an already over-extended narrative. Tech credits are good quality.

When she does bed him, it leads to a miracle healing -- followed by a terrible calamity.

소설을 각색해 영화 만들기를 선호했던 ‘문예감독’ 이치가와 곤이 일본의 근대작가 다니자키 준이치로의 풍속 소설을 스크린으로 옮겼다. 오사카의 몰락한 상류층 집안 네 자매의 사랑과 일상을 잔잔하게 그린 작품. 마키오카 가문의 셋째 딸 유키코는 온화하고 정숙한 여성이지만 마땅한 신랑감을 찾지 못해 언니들의 속을 썩인다. 한편 철부지 막내딸 테코는 보석상의 아들과 눈이 맞아 달아나고, 신문에서는 이 사건을 다루면서 테코의 이름을 유키코로 잘못 보도해 소동이 벌어진다.

An extremely lovely tribute to Ozu, on the 20th anniversary of his death. It uses a combination of footage from vintage films and new material (both interviews and Ozu-related locations) shot by Ozu's long-time camera-man (who came out of retirement to work on this). Surprisingly (or perhaps not), it focuses less on Ozu's accomplishments as a film-maker than on his impact on the lives of the people he worked with..

An industrialist is diagnosed with terminal cancer. He is on a trip to Europe at the time, and a glimpse of a Japanese woman in that setting causes him to fantasize about her as the personification of his impending death. As his dialogue with his imagined mortality continues, he actually meets the living woman who is the template for his fantasy, and together they tour rural churches. Gradually he comes to some kind of peace about the diagnosis. When he returns to Japan, he is met with a series of challenges which profoundly test the lessons he has learned.

고이즈미 야쿠모의 괴기담 중에서 4편의 에피소드를 영상으로 옮긴 옴니버스 영화. 출세를 위해 아내를 버리고 떠났던 무사(‘흑발’), 눈보라 속에서 설녀를 만나 목숨을 건진 청년(‘설녀’), 귀신을 피하기 위해 불경을 몸에 써넣는 맹인 악사(‘귀 없는 호이치’), 찻잔 속에서 기묘한 얼굴을 본 무사(‘찻잔 속’)의 이야기가 오싹한 공포와 함께 펼쳐진다. 환상적인 색채와 표현적인 세트를 이용한 뛰어난 미술과 촬영이 돋보이며, 다케미쓰 도루의 실험적인 음악 또한 탁월하다. 에 이어 두 번째로 칸영화제 심사위원특별상을 수상했다.

Set in 1926 when Japanese tradition was much stronger, this drama looks at the inner workings of a small family, especially the relationship between a sister and brother.

The plot is based on the novel "Akechi Samanosuke no Koi," the final work in a trilogy by Hiroshi Kato about the forced suicide of Oda Nobunaga at the temple Honnoji. Historically, the general Akechi Mitsuhide is credited with causing Nobunaga's downfall. Kato's novel focuses on Mitsuhide's nephew Samanosuke, who fought alongside his uncle during the assault on Honnoji.

동양 플라워즈의 스카우트맨 기시모토는 대학 야구의 강타자 쿠리타를 입단 시키도록 명령을 받았으나, 쿠리타에게는 그를 대학까지 보내며 키워준 다마키라고 하는 정체를 알 수 없는 남자가 함께 있고, 쿠리타는 다마키 애인의 여동생인 후에코와 사랑하는 사이다. 쿠리타를 얻기 위해 각 구단의 스카우트맨들이 분주한 속에 다마키는 쿠리타의 몸값과 함께 자신의 보수도 올리려고 결론을 나중으로 미룬다. 결국은 쿠리타가 귀성한 본가까지 스카우트맨이 들이닥쳐 욕심에 눈이 먼 가족들이 매수되어 형제간에 칼부림까지 일어나게 된다. 결국 쿠리타는 병상에 있는 다마키를 무시하고 오사카 삭스에 입단. 후에코와도 절연, 다마키는 죽게 된다. 너무나 추악한 싸움과 다마키의 몰인정함에 혐오감이 들었던 기시모토 였으나 다마키를 압도할 만한 포수를 찾는데 새로운 의욕을 불태우게 된다.

2차 대전 당시 범죄를 저지른 군인들을 수감 중인 감옥. 이곳에는 다양한 사연을 가진 죄수들이 미군들의 감시 속에서 끔찍한 하루를 보내고 있다. 이들의 꿈은 언젠가 이곳을 나가는 것뿐이다.

결혼 8년째를 맞아 부부생활에 권태를 느끼던 회사원 스기야마 쇼지는 어느 날 샐러리맨들의 하이킹 모임에 갔다가 타이피스트로 일하는 아름답고 쾌활한 가네코 지요와 사랑에 빠진다. 남편의 외도 사실을 알게 된 아내 마사코는 집을 나가는데.. ‘결혼’과 ‘죽음’의 문제를 다룬 영화들 사이에서 가교 역할을 하는 은 오즈가 주로 다루었던 ‘부모와 자식 간의 문제’가 아닌 결혼한 부부의 헤어짐과 재결합을 다룬 작품이다. 이제까지 오즈가 주로 다루었던 주제와는 거리가 있는 이 작품은 메이저 영화사인 쇼치쿠의 의견을 수렴해 관객 취향에 부합하는 일부 성적 문제가 가미된 멜로드라마로 탄생되었지만 여전히 오즈적 영화 스타일은 고수되고 있다. 현재까지 가장 일본적인 감독으로 평가받는 오즈는 이 작품에서도 일본문화 속에 깊이 존재하는 인생의 순환에 대한 철학적인 고찰을 이어가고 있다. Shuzenji Monogatari (The Mask and Destiny) is based on a 12th-century Japanese legend. An abortive royal romance leads to an escalating series of tragedies. The central character is a Japanese monarch who would prefer to live a humble existence as a maskmaker. Unfortunately, events -- and destiny -- are against him. When first released, Shuzenji Monogatari was held in far lower esteem than such recent Japanese films as Gate of Hell and Samurai. Nevertheless, the film was selected as an entry at the Venice Film Festival, possibly on the strength of its excellent production values.

A Chinese medical student named Gan Shosho finds himself cut off from his homeland as he is studying in Japan during the outbreak of the war. Despite his difficult circumstances, he finds love in the form of Sachiko and the two marry. They later travel to Nanjing to live a new life together where Sachiko and Shaochang cooperate with the Japanese-backed government. This film stars Tanaka Kinuyo as the mother of the heir to the Hosho name, a famous lineage of Noh actors. The heir, Hosho Yagoro, is played by Hasegawa Kuzuo who went on to become familiar among Ichikawa Kon fans as Yukinojo in An Actor's Revenge, which was also co-written by Ito, adding to the relatedness of An Heir's Place.

Having completed the first year at his new medical practice, a doctor plans to relax on his day off. However, it is not to be: on this hectic day a man just back from the war front visits the doctor with a medical emergency, followed by a woman who claims to have been molested. Then a yakuza arrives to ask the doctor to cut his finger off...
