생전 구두쇠로 유명한 아버지가 세상을 떠나고 스머트가의 두 형제, 어니(Ernie Smuntz: 나단 레인 분)와 랄스(Lars Smuntz: 리 에반스 분)는 아버지가 남긴 유산을 받으려하지만 그 중 쓸만한 것은 낡은 집 한채 뿐이란 걸 알게 된다. 역시 구두쇠 아버지의 유산이 별볼일 없다는 것을 안 이후, 하던 일도 잘 풀리지 않는다. 레스토랑을 경영하는 어니는 바퀴벌레 소동으로 문을 닫게 되고, 아버지의 노끈 공장을 경영하는 랄스는 재정난에 공장을 폐쇄당하고, 크리스마스 날에 부인으로부터 쫓겨난다. 두 형제가 모인 곳은 아버지가 남긴 덩그런 빈집. 하지만 알고 보니 그 집은 건축학상 수백만 불의 가치가 있는 고가(古家). 두 형제는 이 저택을 개조하여 경매에 붙일 결심을 하는데, 왠지 일이 쉽게 풀리지 않는다. 바로 이 집의 터줏대감인 생쥐 한 마리가 이 두 불청객의 집 팔기에 도울 의사가 전혀 없기 때문이다. 그래, 그냥 무시해 버릴수도 있지만 생쥐와 치즈를 나눠먹고, 아침 밥그릇에 생쥐의 꼬리를 본다는 건. 덤벙거리는 둘의 머리를 합쳐, 1000개의 덫도 복잡하게 깔아보고, 청소기로 쥐구멍을 빨아들여도 보지만 두 형제에게 잡히는 건 하수구 오물이고 망가지는 것은 집이라 했던가. 이 골치덩어리 생쥐잡기는 여간 힘들지 않은데...

This film dramatizes the investigation against Hauptmann, the trial, and the execution, painting a picture of a corrupt police force under pressure to finger a killer framing an innocent man by manufacturing evidence, paying-off and blackmailing witnesses, and covering up exculpatory evidence.
