영화를 좋아하는 사람이라면 "슈퍼맨" 이라는 영화를 잘 알고 있을 것이다. 이 초능력 영웅을 주인공으로 하는 영화의 조상격이라할수 있는 슈퍼맨은 1~4편까지 발매되었는데 1, 2편으로 절정을 찍고 3, 4편으로 쫄딱망하면서 명맥이 끊기고 말았는데 여기에는 나름 뒷얘기가 있다. 1편은 "리차드 도더" 가 감독을 맡고 2~3편은 "리차드 레스터" 가 감독을 맡았는데, 사실은 2편 역시 "리차드 도너" 가 감독을 맡았지만 제작사와의 불화로 촬영 후반후에 다른 감독으로 교체되었다는 것이다. 그 때문에 실제로 개봉된 슈퍼맨2의 내용은 원래 감독인 리차드 도너의 의도와 많이 달라졌다고 하는데, 20년도 넘게 지난 2006년 리차드 도너 감독이 재 편집한 "리차드 도너 편집판 슈퍼맨2" 가 재 발매 되었다. 그렇긴 한데, 사실 내용적인 측면에선 그렇게 큰 차이는 없다.

대그룹의 총수인 로스 웹스터(Ross Webster: 로버트 본 분)와 여동생 베라(Vera Webster: 애니 로스 분)는 얼간이 컴퓨터 기술자 거스(Gus Gorman: 리차드 프라이어 분)를 이용해 궤도에 떠있는 기상위성을 조작하여 콜럼비아에 태풍과 홍수를 일게 만들어 커피 경작지를 망치고 전세계 커피 가격을 마음대로 조종하려다가 수퍼맨의 등장으로 실패한다. 화가 난 로스는 폭발된 클립톤 별의 파편에서 수퍼맨의 약점을 알아내 제거하려고 특수 화합물질을 만들어 수퍼맨에게 선물로 주지만 거스가 성분 하나를 바꾸는 바람에 수퍼맨은 죽지않고 대신 그 화합물 때문에 악한 수퍼맨으로 변신하고 전세계를 다니며 나쁜 짓만 하게 된다. 수퍼맨의 분신인 클락은 악한 수퍼맨과 대결 끝에 본래의 착한 모습으로 되돌오게 되어 악한 슈퍼맨이 저지른 일들을 해결한다. 그리고 거스를 이용해 완성한 막강한 성능을 가진 컴퓨터 요새로 세계 경제를 손에 넣으려는 로스 일당과 치열한 싸움이 벌어진다.
