Malhar (Nana Patekar), who is born to a poor typist clerk, is a versatile character who wins trophies in dramas but is never appreciated by his father. While writing and directing dramas in his college he meets Apoorva (Madhuri Dixit), a very rich girl, and falls madly in love with her. When she wins the Best Actress Award, she calls upon Malhar on stage and gives all the credit to him. Malhar misunderstands this gestures as Apoorva's love for him.

Mansi, played by Aruna Irani the elder sister has to take up professional singing after her father's death and to support the family. The film focuses mainly on the female characters and traces how the younger sibling Bansi played by Shabana Azmi regains her identity.

Janki lives a poor lifestyle in a small village consisting of her dad, Bhervi Prasad and her mom. She meets and falls in love with her school-teacher, Ramcharan, and both want to get married. 데벤(Deven)은 대학에서 힌디 문학을 가르치고 있다. 하지만 그가 진짜 관심을 갖고 있는 것은 우르두어다. 데벤은 잡지사 편집장의 부탁으로 우르두어 시의 살아있는 전설이라 할 수 있는 누르(Nur)를 인터뷰하게 된다. 인도의 유명 시인인 누르는 그의 추종자들과 여러 명의 부인들, 친척들을 거느리며 편안한 삶을 영위하고 있다. 들뜬 마음으로 누르를 만나기 위해 보팔(Bhopal)로 떠난 데벤은 뚱뚱한 술주정뱅이인 그의 모습에 짐짓 놀라고 만다. 데벤은 누르의 시를 녹음하기 위해 낡은 테이프 녹음기를 살 돈을 모으는가 하면, 누르의 첫 번째 부인 사피야(Safiya)를 매수하기도 한다. 매음굴에 방을 얻어 일주일 동안 누르와 함께 있으며 그의 시를 녹음하려 하지만 녹록지가 않다. 끊임없이 나타나는 자칭 누르의 팬들 역시 방해만 될 뿐이다. 누르의 아름다운 둘째 부인 베검(Begum)은 시인으로 인정받고 싶어 하는 여성이다. 하지만 데벤은 베검을 무시하고, 누르와 마찬가지로 데벤 역시 자신의 처자식에게 무관심하다. 결국 실망만 안고 돌아온 데벤은 누르가 보낸 소포를 하나 받게 된다. 그 안에 누르의 시들이 들어 있다. 그리고 누르가 죽음을 앞두고 두려워하고 있었다는 걸 알게 된다. Years later, Shankar, now a career criminal, is arrested for stealing a watch from a man coming out of a jewellery store, he is tried in court and sentenced to jail for 6 months. In prison, he meets with boxing manager, Tony Braganza, and after his release, he starts to train with him and eventually challenges the reigning Champion Raghu Raj.[2]

Branded a coward for abandoning his ship full of 300 passengers, Captain Vijay Pal Singh takes up work in a distant coal mine, poorly equipped, with no sufficient medical supplies or proper facilities. Dr. Gupta has an accident one night, injuring a woman named Geeta and brings her home to recuperate. He teaches her how to mingle with high society, dress and eat properly, and ensures the education of her son. In return for his decency and compassion, Jyoti prepares to marry Dr. Gupta. When her father arrives for the festivities, he recognizes Mukesh.

Kedarnath rents a room with them, writes letters to her on behalf of her husband, Pannalal, and even arranges the marriage of Veena with the son of Daulatram. When Maya tells him that she has no money to pay for the marriage expenses, he steals cash from his employer, and tells Maya that the money is from Pannalal. And all along telling Maya that he is a close friend of Pannalal, even though he has never met Pannalal, leave alone know him, making one think as to what devious secret Kedarnath is hiding, and what is the reason behind Pannalal's disappearance.
