클락 그리즈(체비 체이스 분)는 부인 엘렌(비버리 단젤로 분)과 아들 러스티(마이클 홀 분), 딸 안드레이(다나 배론 분) 남매를 둔 전형적인 미국 중산층 가정의 중년 가장. 그는 휴가를 맞아 가족과 함께 아이들이 꿈꾸는 놀이기구 공원 월리 월드(Walley World)까지 대륙횡단 여행을 떠난다. 가는 도중 갖가지 에피소드를 겪으면서 가족간의 우대를 다진다. 그들의 목적지는 월리월드. 아이들이 꿈꾸는 놀이기구 공원이다. 그러나 비행기로 가는 것이 아니라 자동차로 떠났기 때문에 수 많은 곡절을 겪는다. 그리즈 가족은 아리조나 주에서 길을 잃었다가 도중에서 돈을 몽당털리고 친척집에서 데려다주러 타고 왔던 할머니까지 죽는다. 결국 가족들은 고생 끝에 월리 월드에 도착하나 그 공원이 수리 관계로 휴업 중이다. 화가 난 클라크는 장난감 총으로 경비원을 위협하여 대공원 안으로 들어 갔다가 경찰에 잡히나 회장인 월리(에디 브랙컨 분)의 호의로 방면된다.
