대학생인 카에(사와지리 에리카)는 막 이사한 아파트에서 전에 살던 주인이 두고 간 한 권의 노트를 발견하지만, 바쁘게 지내는 사이 까맣게 잊는다. 어느 날 자신의 아르바이트 가게에 만년필을 사러 온 이시토비(이세야 유스케)를 만나게 되면서 그를 혼자 좋아하게 되고, 설레는 마음을 친구에게 얘기하고 싶지만 가장 친한 친구의 애인에게 고백까지 받아 난감해 하며 초조한 시간을 보내던 그녀는 문득 잊고 있었던 노트를 엿보게 된다. 카에는 읽어서는 안 된다고 생각하면서도 노트를 읽고 노트의 주인인 초등학교 선생인 이부키(타케우치 유코)가 아이들과 함께 찍은 사진도 보게 되면서 교사를 꿈꾸고 있었던 동경하는 마음에 자신도 모르게 일기에 빠져들기 시작하는데, 그 일기장엔 학생들과의 진심 깃든 소통에 대한 내용뿐만 아니라 이부키의 대학동창인 타카시라는 남자를 향한 사랑 고민이 적혀 있었다. 노트를 읽는 동안 이부키의 일기 속 세계에 흠뻑 취해버린 카에는 어느 틈엔가 그 일기에 적힌“마음의 힘”을 얻고 있는 자신을 발견하고 노트에 적인 이부키의 사랑에 이끌리듯 일기를 통해 용기를 얻어 자신도 좋아하는 남자인 이시토비에게 사랑을 고백하지만...

They should be," murmurs Minami (played by Kumiko Aso), one of the two leading female characters in Yunagi no Machi, Sakura no Kuni, as she lies dying in 1958, her life brought to a premature end by sickness resulting from her exposure to atomic bomb radiation. This is a story about those who at least initially survived the first U.S. atomic bombing of 1945 and their descendants in contemporary times. The film, based on a comic by Fumiyo Kono, jumps between the two time frames and quietly depicts the sorrow and mortification experienced through the everyday lives of laid-back and soft-spoken Hiroshima people. Only a few scenes of the bombing and the ensuing devastation are featured.
