633 비행대대의 대대장 로이는 출격을 마치고 귀환한다. 상부의 호출을 받고 본부로 간 로이에게 기다리는 것은 출격 후 얻어지는 대대원의 휴가가 아니라 위험하고도 어려운 작전명령이다. 유럽 침공을 앞두고 연합군에게 위협적인 대서양 방벽의 로켓기지를 무력화하는 작전이었다. 이 로켓들이 사용하게 될 특수 연료가 노르웨이 버겐 근처 피오르드 절벽 밑의 특수 공장에서 생산이 되고 있으며 곧 이 연료가 독일로 수송될 것이라는 정보를 입수한 것이다. 633 배행대대는 모스키토 폭격기로 구성된 대대로 이 임무에 가장 적합한 비행대대였던 것이다. 공장자체는 폭탄으로 파괴할 수가 없게 건설되어 있고 이를 파괴할 방법은 오직 하나. 공장 위의 절벽을 폭격하여 바위 절벽을 무너뜨려 매장시키는 방법뿐이다. 로이는 대대원을 독려해 스코틀랜드의 비슷한 지형에서 맹연습을 개시한다. 그러나 아슬아슬한 비행연습을 되풀이 되는 훈련과정에서 모스키토 한대가 절벽에 충돌하는 사고가 발생한다. 본부에서는 이를 이유로 로이의 지휘권을 박탈하고 공격날까지 지상근무를 명한다. 한편 노르웨이 레지스탕스 출신으로 영국해군에 협력을 하고 있던 버그만이 독일군에 의해 체포되는데...
Set in a Japanese prisoner of war camp during World War II, the film focuses on the brutality and horror that the allied prisoners were exposed to as the Japanese metered out subjugation and punishment to a disgraced and defeated enemy. This harrowing drama concentrates on the deviations of legal and moral definitions when two opposing cultures clash. Although fictional, this was one of the earliest films to deal realistically with life and death in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp during the Second War.
