Funny Up North tells the story of the Mancunian Studios, its eccentric owner John E Blakeley and its cavalcade of stars including such household names as Arthur Askey, Jimmy Jewell, George Formby and the legendary Frank Randle. Hosted by Professor Chris Lee, the authority on northern cinema, Funny Up North takes you on a journey from its humble beginnings to its sad demise in the 1960s.

In Victorian London, the British Government attempts a solution to the problem of prostitution by establishing the world's most fabulous brothel.

When a Soviet submarine gets stuck on a sandbar off the coast of a New England island, its commander orders his second-in-command, Lieutenant Rozanov, to get them moving again before there is an international incident. Rozanov seeks assistance from the island locals, including the police chief and a vacationing television writer, while trying to allay their fears of a Communist invasion by claiming he and his crew are Norwegian sailors.

An Australian "swagman" finds his wife with another man, so he takes the daughter, Buster, with him. On the road together, going from town to town and from farm to farm, father and daughter explore new depths of understanding and bonding.

P.C. George Dixon is a long-serving traditional copper who is due to retire shortly. He takes a new recruit under his aegis and introduces him to the easy-going night beat. Dixon is a classic ordinary hero but also anachronistic, unprepared and unable to answer the violence of the 1950s.

Joe Smart (Frank Randle) is a radio repairman who enters the political arena competing in an upcoming election against his own boss. Joe wins the election, but encounters loads of trouble in the process.

The Rogers family head off by car to Blackpool where, after a musical interlude and fun on the prom, they have an adventure in a haunted house.

Veteran music-hall entertainer Jerry Stanford a washed-up comedian hopes to stage a comeback in a glittering new revue. Alas, Stanford is hired as merely an understudy and bit player. His faithful daughter pulls a few fast ones in order to get her dad back on stage in a starring role....

2차 세계 대전 중 전선에서 이동 중인 부대 행렬. 두 군인이 사진 한 장을 보며 불과 몇 달 전 만났던 전우들을 떠올린다. 전쟁이 일어나자 징집이 시작되고, 의사, 배우, 사진작가, 전역했던 군인 등 다양한 배경과 나이의 다섯 남자가 입영 열차의 비좁은 삼등석에 함께 타게 된다. 각자 자유로운 삶을 살던 다섯 명은 걱정과 두려움 속에서도 함께 훈련을 이겨 내고, 점점 어엿한 군인으로 거듭난다. 영국 육군을 위해 만든 교육용 영화로, 얼마 후 리드는 이 이야기를 장편 영화로 다시 만들었다. 필름이 사라졌다고 여겨졌으나 1993년 인도 국립 필름 아카이브에서 좋은 상태의 필름이 발견되었다. 장편는 1944년에 공개되었다. ⓒ Imperial War Museums(UK) ((재)영화의전당)
