라스베이거스에 유례없이 토네이도가 덮치고 멕시코만에는 예기치 못한 허리케인이 강타하고 시카고는 8월 내내 이상고온 현상에 시달리는 등 기상이변으로 인한 피해가 미국 전역을 뒤덮고 있다. 렉서라는 전력회사의 사장은 이상고온 현상으로 전력 수요가 급증하자 이때를 기회로 삼아 자신의 회사의 능력을 입증해야 한다며 연방법을 어겨 가며 원자력발전소를 무리하게 가동하고 다른 한편으로는 비용 절감이라는 미명하에 전력망 운영 컴퓨터 시스템을 간단하게 프로그램화하는 작업을 추진한다. 하지만 복잡한 운영이 필요한 컴퓨터 시스템을 간단하게 바꾸는 과정에서 해킹에 치명적인 취약함을 드러내고, 그 위험성을 간파한 컴퓨터 시스템 담당자는 불안함에 휩싸인다. 만약 전력망에 해커가 침입하면 미 전역은 순식간에 대규모 정전 사태에 빠지고 만다. 한편, 시카고는 이상고온 현상에서 벗어난 지 며칠 안 돼 시시각각 다가오는 대형 폭풍의 위험 앞에 무방비 상태로 놓이게 된다. 대규모 정전 사태와 대형 폭풍이라는 이중 재앙 앞에 시카고 시민들은 두려움에 떨며 밤을 맞이하는데...
Barnaby and Maxine Pierce, an embattled married couple in Connecticut, are on the verge of divorce. Their son is getting married in California and they decide to drive across the country to attend. Along the way, as they visit family and friends, they reflect on their tattered relationship and the events that transpired to create the estrangement.
