프로축구팀 마이애미의 인기선수 빌리(Billy Clyde Puckett: 버트 레이놀즈 분)와 쉐이크(Shake Tiller: 크리스 크리스토퍼슨 분)는 두 번의 이혼 경력이 있는 구단주의 딸, 제인(Barbara Jane Bookman: 질 크래이버그 분)이라는 여자 친구와 함께 살고 있다. 아프리카 여행에서 돌아온 제인은 쉐이크에게서 친구 이상의 감정을 느끼고 사랑에 빠지고 수퍼볼이 끝나는대로 결혼을 하기로 약속한다. 그러나 그들은 서로의 사랑에 대한 확신을 갖지 못한 채 방황을 하게 된다. 한편 빌리는 제인과 비스라는 정신 훈련 프로그램에 들어가 교육을 받는다. 결국 마이애미는 수퍼볼에 출전해서 우승을 하게 되지만 쉐이크는 결혼식장에서 제인과 결혼을 못하겠다고 하는데...
