아자드는 1915년에 아르메니아에서 태어난다. 1915~1923년에 있었던 터키 정부의 아르메니아인 대학살로 인해 어린 아자드는 아버지 하곱과 어머니 아락시, 이모 애나와 가이앤과 함께 프랑스 마르세이유로 강제 이주를 당한다. 프랑스에 도착한 아자드 가족은 문화적 충격과 가난에 시달리며 힘겹게 생활한다. 하지만 끈끈한 사랑 덕분에 프랑스 사회에 서서히 적응하게 된다. 또한 아자드는 자식에게 좋은 미래를 만들어 주려는 부모님의 헌신적인 노력으로 명문 학교를 졸업하고 엔지니어가 된다.
