A young man lies by a highway with a rifle, shooting people in cars. As the police close in, he kills himself. In flashbacks, his girlfriend explains why it all happened.
회사에서 대외 홍보직을 맡고 있는 조 클레이(잭 레몬), 그는 항상 이런 저런 술자리와 파티를 따라다니느라 한시라도 손에서 술이 떠날 날이 없다. 그러던 어느 날 고객의 요청으로 선상 파티에 여자들을 데리고 가는 중에 고객 회사 비서인 크리스틴(리 레믹)을 그런 여자 중 하나로 오인하지만 조의 끈질긴 요청에 저녁 약속을 허락하고 둘은 함께 저녁을 먹으며 즐거운 시간을 보내고 술 한 모금 하지 못하던 크리스틴은 조를 만나면서 서서히 술 맛을 알아가고 이후 둘의 관계는 급진전하여 결혼도 하고 아이도 낳는다.
하지만 결혼 후에도 매일 접대로 늦는 남편 때문에 크리스틴은 외로운 밤을 술로 달래고 남편이 먼 지방으로 좌천되어 서로 떨어져 살게 되자 외로움이 극에 달한 크리스틴은 술에 취해 담배 불을 붙여놓고 잠드는 바람에 아파트에 불을 낸다. 결국 조까지 회사에서 해고되고 조는 문득 술어 쪄들어 망가진 자신과 아내의 모습에 뭔가를 깨닫는다. 이 후 두 사람은 크리스틴의 아버지 농장으로 내려가 술을 끊고 잊었던 일상의 행복을 잠시 느끼지만 어느 날 밤 다시 시작한 술로 인해 알코올 중독자 재활 병원으로 가게 된다.
그러나 조는 알코올 중독자 모임에 나가면서 점차 건강을 회복하는 반면 아내 크리스틴은 자신이 알코올 중독자라는 사실을 인정 못하고 더욱 술에 의존해 간다. 아내를 설득하다가 조 또한 다시 술을 입에 대고 또 다시 병원에 실려 간다. 다시 병원에서 나온 조는 알코올 중독 치료를 거부하는 아내를 끝내 설득하지 못하고 너무도 사랑하지만 어쩔 수 없이 떠나보낸다.
At the Doll House, a 1930s New Orleans bordello, Hallie is the main attraction both for clients and for Jo, the madame. Her comfortable if tedious life is disrupted by the arrival in town of Dove Linkhorn, her true love of three years before who is now searching for her. When Linkhorn learns the truth of her profession he triggers a chain of events involving a number of people, including the young Kitty with whom he travelled from Texas and who is now the Doll House newest recruit.

Larry, Moe, and Curly-Joe are friends of a young scientist, Schuyler Davis, who has created a time machine. Together with Schuyler's girlfriend, Diane, they are all transported back to ancient Ithaca which is ruled by the tyrannical King Odius. The lecherous king promptly takes a liking to Diane and banishes Schuyler and The Stooges to the galleys. When they manage to escape, they begin promoting Schuyler as "Hercules" at local gladiatorial combats - until the real Hercules shows up. Ella Peterson works in the basement office of Susanswerphone, a telephone answering service. She listens in on others' lives and adds some interest to her own humdrum existence by adopting different identities for her clients. They include an out-of-work Method actor, a dentist with musical yearnings, and in particular playwright Jeffrey Moss, who is suffering from writer's block and desperately needs a muse.
In order to get back into the good graces with his wife with whom he has had a misunderstanding, a young chemistry professor concocts a wild story that he is an undercover FBI agent. To help him with his story he enlists the aid of a friend who is a TV writer. The wife swallows the story and the film's climax takes place in the sub-basements of the Empire State Building. The professor and his friend, believing themselves prisoners on an enemy submarine, patriotically try to scuttle the vessel and succeed only in rocking the building.
