0번째 날, 화학 무기 공격으로 폐허가 된 지구에서 종말 직전에 놓인 인류. 생존자들은 에덴이라는 연구소 시설에서 살아가지만, 이곳은 지옥이나 마찬가지다. 대부분의 시민은 난민촌에 살아가며 식량 배급을 받고, 질서를 어지럽히면 노역이라는 이름으로 목숨을 걸고 화학 물질로 뒤덮인 바깥세상에 내몰린다. 인류의 희망인 인공지능 로봇 아벨은 이브 게이브리얼 박사의 작품. 바깥세상의 화학 물질에도 견딜 수 있는 아벨은 어서 임무를 수행하고 싶어하지만 대통령은 너무 인간적인 그의 모습을 탐탁지 않아 하고, 시민들이 모인 난민촌에는 점점 불만이 커지며 언제라도 폭발할 것 같은 분위기가 지속된다. 한편 난민촌에서 소동을 일으킨 쿠퍼는 노역 세 배에 달하는 벌을 받고 기능이 거의 바닥난 보호복을 입은 채로 밖에 나가게 되고, 아벨은 몰래 그를 따라 연구소 밖으로 나가게 된다.

Detective Chief Superintendent Maurice Jobson is forced to remember the very similar disappearance of Clare Kemplay, who was found dead in 1974, and the subsequent imprisonment of local boy Michael Myshkin. Washed-up local solicitor John Piggott becomes convinced of Myshkin's innocence and begins to fight on his behalf, unwittingly providing a catalyst for Jobson to start to right some wrongs.
