크세니아는 로봇을 좋아하는 아들 토마를 홀로 키우는 싱글맘이다. 어느 날 크세니아는 토마를 국경부근에 살고 있는 전 남편에게 맡기고 새 애인과 소치로 떠나려 하지만, 애인이 준 실망과 전쟁의 위험으로 인해 다시 토마를 데리러 간다. 그러나 토마를 데리러 가기 위해 탄 버스가 폭격을 당하고, 상황은 악화된다. 결국 전쟁이 발발하고, 크세니아는 전쟁을 피해 난민 수용소로 가게 되어 점점 아들과 멀어진다. 그러던 중 토마에게서 전남편이 죽었단 소식을 전해 듣지만, 그만 연락이 끊겨 토마의 생사마저 불투명해지는 상황에 처한다. 토마에게 커다란 위험이 닥쳤음을 직감한 크세니아는 수용소를 떠나 홀로 전쟁터로 뛰어드는데...
