이레네는 아들을 잃고 자책감에 빠진다. 그러다 신문사에서 일하는 사회주의자 사촌 안드레아와 만나며 정신적인 교감을 나누고, 그의 권유로 빈민촌 아이들을 돕기 시작한다. 이레네의 변화를 지켜보던 가족들은 그녀를 정신병원에 보내고, 다시 풍족한 가정으로 돌아오길 권유한다.
