몬티 케슬러(Monty: 브렌든 프레이저 분)는 수마 쿰 로드를 받으며 우등 졸업을 눈앞에 두고 있는 하버드의 장학생. 그래서 냉랭한 겨울 폭풍때문에 그의 컴퓨터가 작동을 멈춰 그의 졸업 논문이 다 날아가 버리자 그는 거의 신경쇠약에 걸릴 지경이었다. 그는 남아있는 유일한 원고를 복사하기 위해 도서관으로 뛰어간다. 아침까지 기다릴 수가 없었던 것이다. 그러나 이것이 몬티를 하버드에서도 배울 수 없었던 아주 색다른 경험으로 몰고 갈 줄은 아무도 몰랐다. 사이몬 와일더는 하버드의 와이드먼 도서관의 지하에 냉혹한 겨울을 보낼 안락한 보금자리를 마련해 놓고 있던 사람 말하자면 부랑자였다. 이때 몬티는 넘어져서 들고가던 논문원고를 창살로 빠뜨리고 이를 사이몬(Simon: 조 페씨 분)이 발견한다. 몬티는 논문을 찾기에 급급해 사이몬을 신고하지만 그의 논문은 찾을 수 없었고 사이몬은 안락한 그만의 보금자리를 잃어버린다. 이렇게 해서 사이몬과 몬티는 거래를 하게 된다. 몬티가 사이몬에게 숙박을 한가지씩 제공할 때마다 논문의 한페이지씩을 돌려받기로 한 것이다.
