제철업계의 대부인 해리(Harry Brock: 브로데릭 크로포드 분)는 자신의 사업에 유리한 의회 개정안에 통과될 수 있도록 일을 꾸미기 위해 약혼녀 빌리(Billie Dawn: 주디 홀리데이 분)와 함께 워싱턴을 방문한다. 사업을 위해서 부정한 방법도 서슴지 않는 해리는 해지스(Norval Hedges: 래리 올리버 분)라는 하원의원을 매수하여 자신이 묵고 있는 호텔로 초대하는데, 그 자리에서 약혼녀 빌리의 무지함이 자신의 일에 방해가 될 수도 있겠다는 생각을 하게 된다. 그래서 워싱턴에 도착하던 날 자신을 인터뷰했던 폴 베럴(Paul Verrall: 윌리암 홀든 분)이라는 프리랜서 기자에게 빌리의 교육을 부탁한다. 해리와 함께 물질적인 소유만을 가장 큰 행복으로 느꼈던 빌리는 폴을 통해 새로운 세상에 눈을 뜨게 되고, 또한 자신의 인생과 올바른 삶에 대한 생각을 하게 된다. 그러던 중 빌리는 해리가 부정한 사업에 아무 것도 모르는 자신을 이용하고 있음을 눈치채고 동조할 것을 거부하다가 해리에게 손찌검을 당하게 된다. 이 일을 계기로 빌리는 해리를 떠나기로 결심하는 한편 자신의 목적을 위해서라면 수단과 방법을 가리지 않는 해리에게 진실과 정의가 있는 세상을 깨우쳐 주기로 하고 해리의 중요한 서류를 기자인 폴에게 제공한다. 중요한 서류가 없어졌음을 안 해리는 빌리와 폴을 다그치지만 오히려 자신의 잘못을 인정하는 결과가 되고 빌리와 폴, 두 사람이 떠나는 것을 지켜볼 수밖에 없는 상황이 된다. 하지만 해리의 돈이면 뭐든 되는 물질만능주의와 수단과 방법을 가리지 않는 자세는 여전히 변할 줄 모른다. 한편 처음 만난 순간부터 부드럽고 박식하고 또 진실된 폴의 모습에 사랑을 느꼈던 빌리와 역시 솔직하고 순수한 빌리에게 이끌렸던 폴, 두 사람 사이에는 사랑이 싹트고. 둘이 신혼여행을 가는 것으로 이야기는 끝을 맺는다.
잭슨시를 대표하는 상원의원이 임기 중에 급사한다. 잭슨시의 다른 상원의원인 조세프 페인은 잭슨시 주지사에게 전화를 걸어 새로운 상원의원을 선출하라고 지시한다. 새로운 의원의 조건은 페인과 그의 재정적 후원자인 짐 테일러의 댐건설 계획을 방해하지 않을 인물이어야 한다는 단서가 붙는다. 주지사는 고민 끝에 보이스카웃 단장인 제퍼슨 스미스를 임명한다. 아이들과 다람쥐나 잡으러 쫓아다니는 순박한 촌뜨기야말로 정치판의 꼭두각시 역할로 적격이라는데 의견을 같이했기 때문이다. 스미스는 죽은 아버지의 친구이자 존경하는 정치가인 페인 의원과 함께 워싱턴으로 향한다. 상원의원으로 임명된 제퍼슨은 잭슨시의 월워크 계곡에 소년 야영장을 만들려는 계획을 입안하여 상정하려 하지만 월워크 계곡에 댐을 건설하려는 페인과 테일러의 계획과 맞부딪친다. 이에 페인은 스미스를 등원시키지 않으려고 음모를 꾸미는데...
In the slums, teenager Frankie Warren hangs out with a rowdy gang who one day knock him out in a fight. Retired hockey player Johnny Hansen, in order to make money to enlarge his chicken farm, returns to the game and leads his team into the championship series. Just before the series starts, he is offered a bribe to throw the games but refuses. An attempt is made on his life which results in Bobby, the team's mascot, being injured. Written by Les Adams
A recently released prisoner lives alone in his cabin so that his bad temper won't get him back in any more trouble, but his peaceful existence is disrupted when a mysterious woman arrives.
Motion picture actress Doria Dane (Edna Goodrich) gives up her career to play muse to sculptor George Steele (Herbert Evans). With Doria's help, Steele overcomes his Bohemian excesses and stays away from the influence of the jealous but wealthy Mrs. Schuyler (Miriam Folger). He finally achieves success, but he also begins to neglect Doria. When she catches him kissing the dreaded Mrs. Schuyler, Doria decides to leave him. But when she goes to his studio to drop off her farewell note, she discovers another sculptor, Harry North, copying one of Steele's masterpieces. Later she comes over to Steele's studio and, in front of a crowd of people, smashes the statue to bits. Then she takes them over to North's studio and explains that she switched the two statues, and reveals North as a fraud. At the base of the real statue she has left a letter of reconciliation to Steele.
