During China's 1920s Republican Period, warlords carve out personal fiefdoms across the country and impose self-serving laws with the barrel of a gun. Into this anarchy rides a masked feminine Zorro, nom de guerre Violet, to do battle, right wrongs and foment rebellion against the most corrupt and brutal warlord of all, Tung Ta-Chou. Unbeknownst to Tung, however, Violet is his own daughter. Tung orders his psycho enforcer Master Wu to track down and dispose of this pesky rebel queen. Meanwhile, Violet begins a flirtation with an attractive stranger who comes to town with the other half of a treasure map held by Tung. Ultimately, Master Wu betrays the warlord on the lure of the complete treasure map, enabling Violet and the stranger to apprehend Master Wu and beat the warlord at his own game.

After there is a mishap at a mine that causing many to die or become injured, Master Chien decides to add insult to injury by not paying out any funds to the survivors of the victims to keep costs down. Many of the townspeople try to get Master Chien to change his mind, but Master Chien does not relent on his decision. The townspeople then ask the Iron Fist King, Chuang Yang, to pay Master Chien a visit and get him to change his mind. After the Iron Fist King shows up at Master Chien’s and defeats his top fighter, Chi Hung, Master Chien decides to comply with the townspeople’s wishes, but little does everybody know that Master Chien has a backup plan that will cause everybody to suffer the consequences and that includes his own self.

Ah Fu’s life gets turned upside down when a mantis fist expert named Nan Kung Ping (Lung Fei) shows up at Ah Fu’s doorsteps seeking to avenge the death of his brother.

After passing his five challenges required to qualify for the mission, Agent Ho Kun is dispatched to the town where the murders took place, to stay in the aforementioned room and complete the mission bestowed upon his ill fated colleagues. Upon discovering that some of the local contacts are employed by the antagonist of this tale, things start to get complicated.

무술의 고수인 풍대인이 화우빈(성룡 분)과 공모해서 궁중의 7가지 보물을 훔쳐내서로 나눠 가진 후 화우빈이 갖고 있는 보물도 전부 뺏기 위해 딸 풍월아를 화우빈과 혼인시켜 보물을 숨긴 곳을 알아내려 한다. 화우빈이 아내에게 보물이 있는 곳을 알려주지 않자, 화우부인은 그에게 독약이 든 보양탕을 먹여 중독시키려 하고, 그 사실을 눈치챈 화우빈은 갖고 있는 해독제를 뺏기 위해 천하의 협객 메이의 도움을 청한다. 한편, 궁중의 보물을 도둑맞은 후 범인이 잡히지 않자, 무술과 계략의 고수인 당상관 풍대인이 그 사건을 맡게 된다. 풍대인은 화우빈에게 죄를 다 뒤집어씌우려고 의협 메이의 도움을 청하면서 자신의 딸 풍월아와 혼인시킨다. 풍대인에게 고용된 메이(왕우 분)는 화우빈을 도와주는 척하면서 화우빈과 그 부인을 조사하는데, 화우부인은 메이가 해독제가 든 상자를 뺏으러 올 줄 알고 가짜 상자를 준비해둔다. 가짜 약 상자를 받은 화우빈은 해독제 안에 든 독약을 먹고 죽은 척 가장한다. 그가 정말 죽은 줄 알고 풍대인과 풍월아가 나타나자 메이는 풍월아와 화우부인이 동일 인물이며, 모든 게 궁중보물을 독차지하기 위한 풍대인의 계략이었음을 깨닫고 유성검으로 처치한다. 풍대인이 죽자 죽은 척 가장했던 화우빈이 나타나 궁중보물에 얽힌 사실을 모두 털어놓고 메이와 대결을 벌이다 그 역시 메이의 마지막 유성검을 맞고 숨진다. 사건 해결 도중 많은 사람들이 희생됐음을 아쉬워하며 떠나는 메이 앞에 풍월아의 심복으로 있었던 봉소저가 나타나 과거의 잘못을 뉘우치며 사모하는 마음을 보이자, 그녀에게 연정을 품고 있었던 메이도 관대하게 봉소저를 받아들인다.

1940년 일제 지배 하의 대만, 주인공 아룡은 도둑질을 일삼으며 살아가다 우연히 쌍절곤이 든 상자를 발견한다. 아룡은 쌍절곤을 돌려주기 위해 정무관이라는 무술 단체를 찾아가고, 도장의 딸 려아에게 무술을 배울 것을 권유 받지만 거절한다. 얼마 후 정무관은 일본인 오카모도가 이끄는 대화문에 의해 명패가 부서지는 모욕을 당한다. 이를 목격한 아룡은 부서진 명패를 재건한 후 려아에게 본격적으로 무술을 배운다. 한편 정무관이 중국의 독립단체와 관련이 있다는 사실을 알게 된 일본 경찰은 오카모도를 내세워 정무관을 없앨 음모를 꾸민다. 이에 아룡은 도장의 명예를 걸고 오카모도와 맞서 싸우는데...

청나라 조정이 소림사를 불 질렀을 때, 채덕중, 마초흥, 방대홍, 이식개, 호덕제 다섯 명이 살아남았는데, 후세가 이들을 오조라 불렀다. 이들은 중원에 도착하자마자 적극적으로 반청 인사들과 연락하는데, 마초흥의 부주의로 행적이 노출되어 내부 첩자인 마복의에게 미행당하고 그를 믿었다가 감옥에 갇히는 신세가 된다. 이에 나머지 사조가 연천 부락의 촌장과 연합하여 동료를 구하던 와중에 촌장이 죽음을 맞는다. 이러한 상황에서 정의가 피가 끓어오르던 오조는 재차 반청 결의를 확고히 하고, 소림사로 돌아가 고된 수련을 이겨내면서 적을 무너뜨릴 무공을 연마하고, 결국에는 악당 모두를 섬멸하지만 애석하게도 방대홍과 이식개 두 명을 잃게 된다. 당시 홍콩 달러로 150만 이상의 수익을 벌어들이며 1974년 쇼브라더스 스튜디오의 최고 흥행작으로 등극하였던 작품. 소림을 배경으로 한 영화가 정점에 이르렀음을 보여주는 작품으로, 그 해 5대 흥행작 가운데 하나일 정도로 흥행에 성공을 거두었다. 제12회 대만 금마장 최우수 녹음상을 수상한 바 있는 이 작품은, 홍콩무협의 황금 콤비인 강대위와 적룡을 비롯, 부성과 척관군이 주연해 현란한 쿵푸 실력을 선사하고 있다.

Flight Man takes place in Taiwan in 1933, when the country was under Japanese occupation after the First Sino-Japanese War. The Taiwanese people have signed a petition to have the Japanese establish a Taiwan council, but instead this merely provokes the Japanese police to hunt down and round up everyone who signed the petition.
