다양한 인종적, 종교적 배경을 가진 세 소년소녀는 고등학교 학예회를 중심 으로 서로 가까워진다. 학예회의 흥겨움, 첫사랑의 두근거림은 이들이 어쩔 수 없는 상처와 가까운 이의 죽음과 함께 엮인다.

Four young Malaysians, Salmi, Razak, Ani and Angee have been assigned to do a picture book of ‘1957’. While two of them grudgingly carry out the request made by the publisher, Zahari, one of them takes on the role enthusiastically. Along the way, they find themselves immersed in the characters, emotional moments, identifying with and finding meaning in the struggle of ‘1957’. They weave the story of independence by transporting themselves back to the past. Ordinary Malaysians who fell in love, and found their love for the country override their personal emotions. 1988년 버마. 남편과 어린 아들을 강도 사건으로 잃고 탈진한 미국인 의사 로라 바우만은 언니의 충고에 따라 언니 부부와 동남아 여행을 하지만 불행한 기억을 털어내지 못하고 괴로워한다. 어느 날 밤 호텔 창문으로 버마 시위대의 모습을 보고 거리를 나섰다가 독재정권의 앞잡이인 군대 앞에 두려움 없이 맞서는 버마 민주화 투쟁의 영웅 아웅산 수지를 본다. 호텔에 돌아온 그녀는 여권을 잃은것을 알게 되고 새 여권이 나올때까지 언니 부부와 떨어져 혼자 랭군에 남게 된다. 미 대사관에서 나온 그녀는 자칭 비공식 가이드인 아웅코와 교외로 관광을 나섰다가 자동차 고장으로 어려움에 처하지만 운동권 대학생들의 도움으로 어려운 상황을 모면하게 되고 그들로부터 아웅코가 투쟁에 협력한 대가로 강단에서 쫓겨난 전직 교수라는 사실을 알게된다. 다음날 아침 랭군에서는 잔혹한 시위 진압 소식을 들은 일행은 은신처를 버리고 태국 국경으로 향한다. 검문에 걸린 아웅코는 로라의 자동차로 도망치게 되고 그 와중에 중상을 입고 차는 강으로 곤두박질한다. 대나무 장사꾼에게 사정해 배를 얻어탄 로라는 잠시 정박한 마을에서 목숨을 걸고 약을 구해오고 배위에서 직접 아웅코의 총알을 빼낸다. 기력을 회복한 아웅코는 로라가 미대사관 앞에서 체포되자 시위 인파의 도움으로 그녀를 구해낸다. 무지막지한 진압이 시작되고 아웅코와 로라는 태국을 향해 가는 일단의 학생들과 합류한다. 군인들을 쓰러뜨리고 검문소를 통과한 그들은 걸어서 반정부 게릴라 캠프에 도달한다. 다음날 일행은 정부군의 빗발치는 포격속에 태국 땅 난민캠프가 바라다 보이는 강을 건너게 되는데.......

Mastura, who returns from her studies abroad, feels the loss of her good pal, E.J. who has chosen to follow the path of the religious extremist group led by Brother Musa. Halim, who has had experiences working abroad serving the Middle East, supports Mastura’s good intention and encourages her to join ‘Rescaid’, a volunteer organization. In her line of duty in helping the children refugees from Palestine, Mastura falls in love with Kamal, a divorcee who shares the cause she is pursuing. The success of a nation-wide charity concert promoted by Mastura and the team from ‘Rescaid’ becomes the pride of the locals, until one day, tragedy strikes unexpectedly. However, it does not kill Mastura’s determination to protect the fate of the unfortunate.
