A banker, husband, and father, Mr. Smith must leave it behind him. He's made a mistake and he's trying to pay for it but he doesn't know if there is enough money in the world. 광고 회사에서 배경 음악을 맡고 있는 리차드(Richard Parker: 케빈 클라인 분)와 프리실라(Priscilla Parker: 매리 엘리자베스 매스트란토니오 분) 부부는 지극히 평범한 보통시민이다. 어느날 이웃에 에디(Eddy Otis: 케빈 스페이시 분)와 케이(Kay Otis: 레베카 밀러 분) 부부가 이사오면서 사건이 일어나게 된다. 리차드는 케이의 미모에 끌려 그녀의 노래 솜씨를 추켜주고 에디는 그런 리차드의 태도를 유심히 관찰한다. 리차드의 빚까지 갚아주며 여러가지 호의를 베풀던 에디는 부인들 모르게 한밤중에 서로 밖으로 나와 상대방 침실에 잠시 들렸다 나오자는 제의를 한다. 미친 수작이라면서 상대도 안하던 리차드는 집요한 에디의 설득에 그만 넘어가 승락한다. 그러나 위험한 묵계를 실천한 바로 그날 밤 케이가 타살되고 리차드는 범인으로 몰린다. 에디는 아내의 죽음으로 보험금 150만 달러를 타낸다. 에디의 계략에 빠진 줄 알았지만 이미 때는 늦었다. 라디오를 통해서 케이의 노래를 들은 리차드는 케이가 살아있음을 확인하고 사립탐정 더튼빌(David Duttonville: 포레스트 휘테커 분)의 도움으로 케이를 찾아내지만 뒤이어 케이마저 살해된다. 또한번 누명을 쓰게된 리차드는 에디의 집으로 찾아가고. 리차드와 이혼하고 에디와 함께 살던 프리실라는 에디가 진범인 것을 뒤늦게 알고, 찾아온 리차드를 죽이려던 에디를 처치한다.

Two young kids in love, one young graffiti artist and the other a foster-child, find trouble on the mean streets on the other side of the river in New York City. Officer Charles Banks finds young Danny tagging subway cars and then catches Teiresa selling drugs for another mislead teen, Kirk. The officer, instead of turning both of them in, gives both teens a chance to make more of their lives together. Changing their ways turns out to be more challenging than first thought.

William Saroyan's Pulitzer Prize-winning play revolves around the denizens of a San Francisco bar in 1939. Lonely, lovelorn, weary or cynical, the characters drift in and out of the bar and each other's lives, giving voice to Saroyan's philosophies as they randomly comment about the impending world war, the beauty of art, and traditional notions of good and evil. At least one of the relationships stands a chance of enduring: a brawny innocent named Tom is falling in love with a vulnerable young prostitute named Kitty. Saroyan himself is heard reciting the play's prologue.
