영국의 록 밴드 ‘더 후(The Who)’는 미국에서의 첫 번째 투어를 마치고 LA에서 TV쇼에 출연한다. 평범하게 연주를 시작한 멤버들은 갑자기 악기를 부수고, 사회자는 어쩔 줄 몰라 하지만 객석은 웃음바다가 된다. 1964년 결성된 ‘더 후’의 공연 실황과 인터뷰가 담긴 로큐멘터리(Rockumentary). 격정적인 퍼포먼스로 유명했던 그들의 쇼맨십은 시작부터 시선을 사로잡는다. 멤버 키스 문이 편집본을 본 뒤 일주일 후 갑작스럽게 사망하자, 다른 멤버들과 감독은 ‘더 후’와 함께 한 그의 삶을 기리며 키스 문이 봤던 편집본에서 단 한 프레임도 수정하지 않았다고 한다. 스탠드 업 코미디언 레니가 죽은 후 레니를 기억하는 사람들의 증언을 중심으로 레니의 일생을 다시 짜 맞춘다. 스트립 댄서였던 레니의 아내 허니와 레니의 어머니가 증언하는 레니의 모습이 레니의 실제 면모를 이해시키는 결정적인 단서가 된다. 미국의 위선을 들춰내고 조롱한 천재 코미디언으로 그를 추앙하는 사람들의 평가와는 정반대로 그가 저질농담으로 대중을 타락시킨 삼류 연예인이라는 비판적인 여론도 있었다. 초창기에는 전통적인 스탠딩 코미디를 구사하던 그는 점차 미국과 미국인을 풍자하는 코미디언으로 변모해간다. 법적인 제제를 받을만큼 금기(성)에 대한 표현도 노골적이 되어간다. 그러면서 스스로도 자제력을 잃고 마약과 변태적 성생활을 즐기며 무너져가던 레니는 심각한 강박관념에 시달리며 코미디에도 생기를 잃고 인기도 잃는다. 결국 그는 자신의 아파트 화장실에서 팔에 주사를 꽂은채 힘없이 죽고 말았다. 하지만, 그는 시대와 결국은 불화한 기인이었으며 그를 출세하게 만든것도 불행하게 만든것도 미국사회의 위선이었다. 이 영화에서 더스틴 호프만의 연기는 압권이다. (1967)으로 스타덤에 오른 더스틴 호프만은 유머러스하면서도 비애가 가득한 양면을 모두 가지고 있어 레니 역에 적역이었다. 는 1975년 아카데미 시상식에서 남우주연상 포함 총 6개 부문 후보로 올랐는데, 더스틴 호프만은 자신의 연기가 만족스럽지 않다는 이유로 시상식에 불참하기도 했다. 는 6개 부문 중 단 하나의 상도 수상하지 못했지만 칸영화제 경쟁부문에 올라 레니의 아내를 연기한 발레리 페린이 여우주연상을 거머쥐는 성과를 거뒀다. 누구보다도 치열한 삶을 살았던 코미디언 레니 브루스, 더스틴 호프만의 명연기로 부활하다

텍사스에서 접시 닦기를 하던 조는 돈을 벌고자 뉴욕에 카우보이 차림으로 나타난다. 그가 가진 것이라곤 몸뚱이 하나뿐. 돈이 있어 보이는 여인에게 추파를 던졌으나 어쩐지 걸려들지 않는다. 실패를 거듭한 끝에 겨우 나이 많은 여인 캐스를 만나 호텔로 향한다. 그러나 그녀는 창부였고 오히려 조는 돈을 뜯긴다. 자포자기하여 바에서 술을 마시고 있는 조에게 랏소가 다가와 듣고선 매니저를 주선해 주겠다며 사기를 친다. 결국 호텔에서도 쫓겨난 조는 돈을 받으러 랏소의 아파트를 찾아가지만 병에 걸린 랏소를 보며 묘한 우정을 느낀다. 도시 생활에 지쳐버린 존은 병들어 죽어가는 랏초의 소원대로 따뜻한 마이애미로 떠나기로 하는데...
