The film describes the magnificent life story of Fan Jinshi, the "Daughter of Dunhuang" and winner of the national honorary title, who sticks to the desert and protects the world's treasure Mogao Grottoes. Taking root in Dunhuang for more than 50 years, Fan Jinshi (played by Chen Jin) and her colleagues from the Dunhuang Academy have been fighting alone against the wind and sand in the northwest to rescue and protect every cultural relic in the Mogao Grottoes; "Mogao must never be allowed to The grottoes have disappeared in our generation!" 중국정부에 비판적인 영화를 만들다 중국 내 활동이 어려워진 양수 감독은 5년째 홍콩에서 일종의 정치적인 망명 생활을 하고 있다. 홍콩인 남편과 함께 이제 4살된 아들을 두고 강의도 하고 새로운 영화 기획도 하면서 겉으로는 안정된 홍콩 주민으로 살고 있는 것처럼 보인다. 영화가 시작되면 이들 가족은 첩보영화 주인공들처럼 조심스럽게 대만으로 떠난다. 양수 감독이 5년전 중국을 떠난 후 고향에 혼자 남은 엄마가 중국 단체 여행단으로 대만에 도착했기 때문이다. 딸이 떠난 후 엄마는 중국 공안의 주기적인 감찰 방문조사에 시달렸고 그 모든 것을 녹음해 딸에게 건네준다. 이란 소박한 타이틀과 달리 평범한 한 가족의 잠깐의 재회를 위해 중국도 홍콩도 아닌 대만을 택해야 하는 이들 가족의 속사정을 온전히 이해하려면 중국현대사를 다시 되돌아보고 억압에 맞서며 예술가의 자유를 지켜내려는 잉량 감독의 영화 여정에 대한 되새김이 필요해진다. This omnibus film consists of three films made by three directors from three countries. With “Journey” as the theme, each of these films tells about a journey. “The Sea” is a film by Degena Yun (China), telling about mother and child’s trip to the sea from Beijing. “Hekishu,” a film by Daishi Matsunaga (Japan), tells about the journey of a Japanese businessman involved in infrastructure development in Yangon. The film depicts the entrepreneur’s emotional feelings in the face of Yangon residents who lost their homes due to the construction of the new infrastructure. The last is a film titled “Variable No. 3” by Edwin (Indonesia), which tells the story of a couple’s journey to Tokyo. There they meet a mysterious man. The man who works as a tour guide and rents out the inn, gives a strange advice to the husband and wife.

The Chinese police visit head-teacher Chen at home. Her daughter, a dissident filmmaker living in Hong Kong, plans yet another critical film about China's colonization of the small autonomous territory. The authorities demand that Chen travel to her daughter to stop the film project. What they do not take into account is that Chen and her daughter lost contact long ago.

China, 1997. An unhappy marriage, a love affair and a child who holds all the secrets.

Xiaoma, a young woman who has recently moved to Beijing, finds an apartment in an old courtyard apartment complex owned by Grandma, an elderly woman. Xiaoma and Grandma’s relationship almost immediately becomes strained. After trying to tidy up the courtyard, Grandma insists that Xiaoma turn over her share of the profits. Tightfisted, the elderly landlady resists even allowing Xiaoma to install a telephone. At the same time the older woman becomes increasingly interested in Xiaoma’s personal (and romantic) life. Grandma, for example, tries to pass off her grandson to the younger woman. Annoyed, Xiaoma nevertheless is flattered at the older woman’s concern. Over the course of four seasons, Xiaoma begins to learn from her landlady of the old world that the modern city of Beijing has left behind, while Grandma begins to enjoy the youth and vitality of her tenant. The two women become closer and eventually develop a deep friendship.
