농기구 회사의 영업사원인 버드(George Bird: 알렉 기네스 분)는 불치병 진단을 받는다. 의사는 외로운 그에게 주변을 정리하고, 여행을 다니면서 남은 인생을 보내라고 충고한다. 버드는 직장을 그만두고 그 동안 모아둔 돈을 찾아 유명 인사들이 출입하는 고급 호텔에 투숙한다. 사회적으로 상류층에 속하는 투숙객들은 돈도 많고 생활에 여유도 있지만 가식적이고 이중적인 모습을 보인다. 한편 순수하고 다정다감한 버드에게 투숙객 및 종업원들 모두 호감을 갖게되고, 버드는 호텔에 묵고 있는 발명가로부터 사업적인 제의를 받는다든가 정치가 등으로부터 여러 가지 제안을 받는다. 일상적인 욕심을 벗어나 인생을 정리하는 그에게는 행운도 따라주어 경마, 카드 등으로 돈을 벌게 되고 그 돈으로 어려움에 처한 주변 사람들에게 도움을 준다. 그리고 호텔 객실 관리원인 풀 부인(Mrs. Poole: 케이 월쉬 분)과의 애정도 싹튼다. 하지만 인생에서 처음 느껴보는 이런 행복도 죽음을 앞둔 버드에게는 진정한 행복으로 느껴지지 않는데...
