미국 교환 교수인 데이빗 폴락(그레고리 펙 분)은 옥스퍼드 대학에서 고대어를 가르치며 평범하게 살아가던 중 세계 평화를 위해서 중동 출신의 최고의 재력가 니짐 베쉬라비를 염탐하라는 제의를 받는다. 그래서 그는 상형 문자로 적힌 비밀 전문을 해독해 주면 거액을 주겠다는 베쉬라비의 제안을 받아들인다. 하지만 그는 베쉬라비의 여자인 야스민 아지어(소피아 로렌 분)에게서 베쉬라비가 해독 내용이 알려질까 봐 자신을 죽일지도 모른다는 얘길 듣고 당황한다. 야스민은 자신과 함께 있으면 베쉬라비가 함부로 총질을 못할 테니 자신을 인질로 삼아서 그곳을 탈출하라고 제안한다. 폴락은 비밀 전문을 사탕 껍질에 싸서 주머니에 집어넣고는 야스민과 함께 필사적으로 그곳을 빠져나가려고 애쓴다. 야스민이 왜 자신을 도우려고 하는지에 대해서는 조금도 의심하지 않은 채 말이다. 한창 베쉬라비의 부하들에게서 도망을 가던 중 자신을 경찰이라고 소개하는 낯선 남자로부터 도움을 받게 되는데 그 남자 또한 경찰이라고 하긴엔 행동에 수상쩍음이 너무나 많다. 결국 폴락은 이 남자가 야스민과 한 패이고 이들 또한 상형 문자의 비밀을 알아내기 위해서 폴락을 끌어들였다는 걸 알게 되는데... 과연 야스민의 정체는 뭘까? 또한 상형 문자의 내용은 무엇일까? 그리고 폴락과 야스민은 어떻게 될 것인가?
