파리의 사립탐정 클로드는 의뢰인으로부터 바람둥이로 악명 높은 미국인 프랭크 플래너건과 외도를 하고 있는 아내의 뒷조사를 해달라는 의뢰를 받는다. 의뢰인은 자신의 의심이 맞았다는 사실을 듣고 나자 클로드에게 플래너건을 살해하겠다고 털어놓는다. 클로드의 딸 아리안느는 이 사실을 엿듣고 플래너건에게 위험을 미리 알려준다. 아리안느는 자신도 수많은 남자들을 울리는 치명적인 여성인 척 하고, 천하의 플래너건은 이러한 아리안느에게 매료된다. 무사히 미국으로 돌아간 플래너건은 이듬해에 다시 아리안느와 재회하고, 아리안느가 털어놓는 수많은 연애담에 질투심을 느끼고 사설탐정을 고용해 그녀의 뒤를 캐려 한다. 플래너건에게 고용된 사설탐정은 다름 아닌 클로드. 자신의 딸이 바람둥이 플래너건의 눈에 든 사실을 안 클로드는 그에게 순진한 아리안느의 마음을 짓밟지 말고 말없이 그녀를 떠나라고 부탁한다.
