2000년이 도래하자, 세상은 극도로 흉악해지고 악마가 세상을 지배하기 위해 일어선다. 지옥 문 위에 세워진 예루살렘의 한 수도원은 지옥문의 열쇠를 2천년동안 숨겨 왔다. 예수탄생으로부터 처음 천 년이 되는 시점에 사탄의 하수인인 미니언에게 열쇠를 빼앗길 위기에 처했다가 간신히 보존하고 아메리카로 열쇠를 옮겨둔다. 그로부터 천년 후, 1999년 12월 말에 뉴욕의 한 지하철 역 터널에서 기사의 유골과 함께 열쇠가 발견된다. 예루살렘의 기사단에서는 이 열쇠를 회수하기 위해 전사 루카스를 뉴욕으로 보내고 미니언 역시 사탄을 해방시키기 위해 이 열쇠를 찾으러 온다. 여류 고고학자인 캐런은 고대 유적이 발견됐다는 소식에 이 터널을 조사하다가 그 열쇠를 발견하는데 거기서 만난 루카스와 함께 사탄과 대결하게 된다. 사탄의 하수인 미니언은 죽지 않는 악령으로 사람의 눈을 통해 옮겨다니며 두뇌를 조종한다. 루카스와 캐런은 그 열쇠를 핵폐기물 처리시설 안에 숨기려 하지만, 캐런의 스승 데이빗의 몸을 빌려 추적해 온 미니언에게 결국 빼앗기고 만다. 드디어, 예루살렘의 지옥문에는 열쇠가 꽂히고 기사단은 미니언에게 전멸당한다. 뒤늦게 따라온 루카스와 캐런. 지옥문이 열리기 일보 직전, 숨막히는 격전 끝에 미니언을 처단하고 지옥문에 꽂혀 있는 열쇠를 힘겹게 빼낸다.
