Our hero is the 18-year-old Alessio Mainardi, who receives a token red carnation from a girl named Giovanna and becomes a symbol of love, desire, and even has political overtones as a symbol of the struggle for political freedom in opposition to Fascism.
1844년 연합군에 항복한 이탈리아의 북부 지역을 점령한 나찌 독일에 의해 레지스탕스에게 협조 하였다는 이유로 마을 전체 주민이 몰살을 당한다. 이를 산에서 숨어 지켜보던 아이들의 눈에는 오로지 독일군에 대한 강한 증오만이 타오를 뿐이다. 한편 미군 측에서는 군사적인 목적으로 이 마을의 댐을 폭파하기 위해 특공대를 침투시키지만 착륙 즉시 몰살을 당하고 만다. 겨우 나뭇가지에 걸려 목숨을 보존한 한명이 이들 어린 전쟁고아들에게 구조가 되지만 부상으로 의식을 회복하지 못하고 죽어 가는 중이었다. 결국 아이들은 독일 점령이의 여의사를 꾀어 납치하여 미군 병사에게 끌고 와 치료를 강요한다. 협박에 못 이겨 치료를 하여 회복을 시키지만 아이들의 눈에 그 미군은 자신들의 적인 독일군들과 싸울 수 있는 방법을 가르쳐 줄 수 있는 유일한 도구일 뿐이다
A mute mother stands by idly as her young children radicalise as a result of a society that thrives on conflict and manipulation. As she is drawn to a group of political activists, her absence allows her children to become increasingly extreme in their behaviour and lethal games they play.
