애정없는 결혼 생활을 이어가던 까미유와 뽈 자벨은 사소한 말다툼 끝에 헤어지기로 결심한다. 뽈은 불화의 원인이 자신의 바람기에 대한 아내의 질투심 때문이라고 생각하지만, 사실은 까미유가 예술가로서의 남편에 대한 존경심을 상실한 데에 있었다. 까미유는 자신의 모든 삶을, 특히 결혼생활과 남편을 경멸한다고 토로한다. 한편 소설가인 뽈은 대중적인 기호에 맞는 시나리오를 써 줄 젊은 작가를 찾던 헐리우드의 제작자 제레미 프로코슈에 발탁되어 프리츠 랑 감독이 연출을 맡기로 한 호메로스의 고전 <오디세이>의 시나리오를 쓰기로 한다. <경멸>은 장뤽 고다르 감독의 초기 대표작 중의 하나로, 인간관계를 다룬 드라마이며, 독일 영화의 거장 프리츠 랑 감독이 실명으로 출연해 호메로스의 <오디세이>를 현대적인 감각으로 각색해 만드는 '영화 속의 영화'를 찍는 과정을 담고 있다. 나도 한 번 '유럽 예술 영화'를 제작해보겠다고 덤비는 거칠고 무식하고 야비한 헐리우드의 제작자 프로코슈와 '돈이냐 예술이냐' 사이에서 갈등하는 시나리오 작가 뽈 자벨이 덧붙여져, 영화를 둘러싸고 벌어지는 이들 사이의 복잡한 인간관계를 중심으로 이야기가 전개된다. 이 영화는 '영화 속의 영화'를 만드는 과정을 통해 헐리우드 제작자들의 황금만능주의와 어리석음, 탐욕에 대한 풍자를 담아내며, 영화의 상업성과 예술적 표현 사이의 갈등을 정면으로 다루고 있다. 고다르는 '영화란 무엇이며, 사람들은 왜 영화를 만드는가'에 대해 관객들이 생각해 보도록 하려는 것이 <경멸>의 연출의도라고 밝힌 적이 있다. 그러나 그의 대부분의 영화가 그렇듯 시원한 해답을 제시하고 있지는 않다. 해답을 찾아내는 것은 어디까지나 관객의 몫으로 남겨질 뿐이다.
