영화나 소설에서나 보던 극적인 사랑은 잠시 접어두자. 이른 바 ‘생활형 사랑’이라고나 할까? 수자오렌 감독이 <17세의 꿈>에서 이야기하는 사랑이 바로 그런 것이다. 17살 고교생 샤오양의 주변에는 온통 사랑과 이별로 홍역을 앓는 사람들 뿐이다. 친구 샤오마는 애인 티안티안과 사랑싸움을 하고 있고, 누나 샤오랑은 실연당한 뒤 샤오양의 권유에 의해 아침식당을 운영하는 마이클과 다시 사랑을 시작한다. 주스가게를 운영하는 엄마는 옆가게 주인인 청년 아샨과, 인쇄소를 운영하는 아빠는 결혼을 앞둔 이웃집 처녀 샤오리와 점차 가까워 진다. 정작 이들을 바라보는 샤오양만 혼자이다. 그는 다른 사람의 연애편지를 전달해주고 읽는 것을 즐긴다. 사실 이들 모두는 아주 평범한 사람들이다. 샤오양의 가족 역시 별 문제가 없다. 그런데도 그들은 다른 사람들에게 눈을 돌린다. 그렇지만, 이들의 사랑이 지극히 현실적인 것처럼 보이는 것은 수자오렌 감독이 ‘사랑’을 ‘환상’에서 ‘현실’로 끌어내리고 있기 때문이리라. Gigi and Marlene, two single women both in their late 20's, work at a bio-technology company, researching and developing medicine to suppress specific genes and observe their effects on the human body. Gigi is born with the "clean-freak" gene and her obsession with keeping things tidy causes problems in her relationships. Marlene, on the other hand, is born with the "fat gene" and needs to regularly take pills to maintain her weight. Marlene panics when she learns that her "anti-fat" pills will be taken off the market. Their personal problems coincide with romantic ones. Marlene grows frustrated maintaining her long-distance relationships via the Internet, and Gigi leaves her boyfriend when she discovers he's cheating on her.

Ah Lei is the younger brother of Stone, a guitarist of Mayday. He is also the administrator of Mayday's fansite, in charge of replying to fan letters and emails. One day, he befriended a girl named Zhao Xuan through a chatroom. He told her that he's actually Ashin, the lead vocal of Mayday. She started writing letters to him, believing that he was Ashin. Finally, Xuan's peking opera group from school gets to leave Harbin and travel to Taiwan to perform. The two promised to meet in a library, but Ah Lei didn't have the courage to meet up with her. He decides to follow her around, but did not expect that she followed him back, and that she saw through his lies all along.
