시리아와 프랑스가 교전을 하고 있는 1925년 다마스커스. 해리 스미스(험프리 보가트)는 무기 밀매와 군사 식량을 고가에 팔아 이윤을 챙기는 무역업자. 한편 시리아에도 무기를 밀매하던 스미스는 페로 대령에 의해 발각된고, 그를 살려주는 대신, 시리아의 접선 장소를 알려 달라고 하고, 휴전 협상을 위해 목숨을 걸고 시리아로 들어간다. 군 사령부는 핵심 인물이 페로 대령의 안전을 위해 시리아에 돈을 주고 페로 대령을 빼와 달라는 부탁을 스미스에게 하고 페로 대령을 구하지만, 스미스 본인은 죽음을 맞이한다.

One night, drunk, William writes Octavius, demanding his daughter's hand; but, being drunk, he asks for the wrong sister.
