This is the story of the two babies who were switched at birth. A few years later when one of the girls gets sick and tests revealed that she was not the daughter of the couple who raised her. Eventually she dies. And the couple most especially the mother, search for their real daughter. Eventually they suspect that it's a widower who has their child. Now while they try to find out if she is their daughter, the widower is advised by his attorney not to be so hasty to cooperate, cause if she is their daughter, he might lose her, and she is all he has.

올리버(마이클 더글러스 분)와 바바라(캐슬린 터너 분)는 첫 눈에 반해 결혼한다. 올리버는 동료 개빈(대니 드비토 분)과 함께 장래가 촉망되는 야심만만한 변호사 초년생이고, 바바라는 건강한 육체의 매우 능동적인 여인이다. 세월이 흘러 이들 사이에 아들 조쉬, 딸 콜로린도 생기고 자동차, 집 등을 이루고 살 때 가지는 정상적인 결혼 생활을 꾸린다. 그러나 일단 경제적 물질적 안정을 이루자 사소한 것으로부터 의견충돌이 잦아진다. 대화는 상대적으로 줄어들고 자존심만 내세우는 둘 사이에 불신의 틈이 벌어진다. 올리버의 입원 소동으로 바바라는 드디어 이혼을 요구하고 집 소유권을 놓고 양보없는 싸움을 시작한다. 이들은 게빈의 중재로 이혼 상태지만 한 지붕 아래 기거하기로 한다. 그러나 아이들이 대학 진학을 하고, 가정부도 떠나자 둘만 남은 집안에서 본격적인 생사의 전쟁이 벌어지는데...

Orville doesn't give any comment on the case, is taken into protective custody. Journalist Smith persuades him to help him in the investigation - and finds out about economic motives for the murder.

A TV producer cultivates a somewhat reserved and protective young woman after interviewing her for one of his programs.

A modern-day Socrates leaves behind his life as a philosopher to live off the land. When a police inspector is assigned to follow the man and question his motives, the cop gets caught up in the charming philosophy of the man who has left his material possessions behind. He encounters a pretty young woman and her nihilistic boyfriend, the latter who makes a living with his psychedelic side shows. The boyfriend gets the newspapers to print the philosopher's thoughts, prompting him to acquire a bevy of believers. There is some nudity in this comical thought-provoking story, but the main focus remains the words of the man who left behind creature comforts to find himself.
