US-Navy pilot Lt. Richard Tabor crash-lands on a south Pacific isle called Love Island in English. Richard befriends the Balinese beauty Sarna. The bad and jealous Jaraka doesn't like their friendship, so he has Sarna's father Aryuna arrested on a vague charge. Jaraka tells Aryuna that he only will be released when his daughter marries him.

In this musical set in swingin' Manhattan, an heiress plans a ballet in the famous Moonbeam ballroom located atop a 100-story skyscraper. 1930년 시점에 선구적인 컬러 영화일 뿐만 아니라 영화적 표현도 혁신적이다. 무성영화와 흑백 영화, 그리고 영화 이전에영화의 역할을 하던 극에 대한 전통이 녹아들어 시대를 넘는 쿨함으로 탄생하다. 20세기 초반에도 예상 외로 컬러 영화가 꽤 많이 나왔지만 폴 화이트먼의 오케스트라의 비주얼한 퍼포먼스를 엮은 이 영화는 공황 직전 거슈윈의 음악으로 흐르는 낙관적인 태도와 모든 문화의 mix로서 미국이 중심이 되고있다는 자신감으로 가득차 있다.
