아내 쥬드가 세 아들과 자신을 버리고 가출한지 3년, 로버트는 아이들이 다니는 학교 교감인 콜린과 사랑에 빠져 결혼하려 한다. 아이들은 물론 쥬드의 어머니 리디아조차 콜린을 친딸처럼 사랑해 축복받은 결혼이 될 것이라 생각하는데, 느닷없이 쥬드가 나타나 아이들은 물론 남편도 되찾겠다고 선언한다. 로버트는 변호사를 내세워 단호히 대처하지만 법적 권리가 있는 쥬드와 아이들과의 면회까지 막을 수는 없다. 악랄한 쥬드는 이를 이용하여 아이들을 회유해 로버트와 콜린을 갈라놓으려 한다. 장남 케스를 통한 쥬드의 콜린 괴롭히기가 시작되는데...
