존 레넌의 암살범인 마크 채프먼의 이야기를 다룬 영화로 채프먼이 암살당시 지니고 있던 '호밀밭의 파수꾼'에서 제목을 따왔다. '호밀밭의 파수꾼'은 챕터 26까지 있는 소설로 영화 제목인 은 소설속의 주인공과 자신을 동일시 했던 채프먼의 행적을 의미하는 뜻으로 붙여졌다.

뉴욕 부동산 업계의 거물인 브레드 섹스톤(팀 알렌 분)은 전형적인 도시 사업가이다. 결혼 10주년 기념 파티를 성대하게 치르던 날, 브레드와 그녀의 아내인 캐롤라인은 평소 상대방에게 느꼈던 불만을 이야기 하다가 결국 이혼하기로 합의한다. 그러나 다음날 회사에 출근한 브래드는 놀랍고 황당한 사실을 접한다. 그렇게 믿었던 친구이자 회계사인 밥이 거액을 횡령한 것이다. 설상가상으로 캐롤라인과 함께 5백만 달러의 세금을 포탈한 혐의로 국세청의 조사까지 받아야할 상황에 처한다. 궁지에 몰린 브래드는 우선 발등의 불부터 끈 다음 차근차근 문제를 해결하기로 작정하고 끈질기게 따라붙는 국세청 감사팀 직원들을 따돌린 후, 캐롤라인과 함께 뉴욕시를 빠져나간다. 무작정 달리던 이들 부부는 이정표를 잘못 보고 강물에 빠진다. 그리고 다음날 아침, 사회와 떨어져 청빈한 생활을 하고 있는 아만 교도들의 마을에 도착한다.
