22세기 중반, 인류는 본격적인 우주 식민지 개척에 나선다. 미지의 영역에 식민지를 건설하기에 앞서 불안정한 상태의 행성을 찾아내 파괴하려는 목적으로 정찰용 우주선이 파견되는데, '다크 스타'가 바로 그것이다. 우주선의 중앙 컴퓨터 오류로 잘못된 폭발 명령이 내려지자 조종사들은 폭탄에게 폭발 취소를 명하지만 폭탄은 "내가 존재하는 이유는 폭발하기 위해서"라며 카운트다운을 계속한다. 결국 미친 폭탄 하나가 우주선을 박살내는 것을 막기 위해 조종사 한 명이 폭탄에게 다가가 "이봐, 폭탄! 자네는 과연 존재의 진정한 의미를 알고 있나?"라며 현상학과 존재에 관한 철학 강의를 해준다. 물론 목적은 폭탄을 헷갈리게 만들어서 폭발 명령을 무시하도록 하는 것. 잠시 카운트다운을 중지하고 사색에 잠겼던 폭탄은 "태초의 어둠 속에 내가 있었노라"며 횡설수설하더니 "빛이 있으라!"고 말한 뒤 장렬하게 폭발하고 만다.
