LA 시내에 첨단 시설을 갖춘 치과의 원장인 앨런 파인스톤(Dr. Feinstone: 코빈 번슨 분). 그는 병적인 결벽증이 있지만 그런 대로 아내 브룩(Brooke: 린다 호프만 분)과 행복한 삶을 산다. 그러던 어느날, 두사람의 결혼 기념일, 아내가 풀장 청소원 앞에서 맨살에 가운만 걸친 모습을 보자 갑자기 아내가 혹시 바람을 피우는 것이 아닌가하는 의심이 발동한다. 평소처럼 출근하는 척, 집을 나왔다가 다시 집으로 돌아온 그는 집안을 감시한다. 그러나, 불행히도 예감은 현실로 다가오고 앨런은 아내가 젊고 야성적인 청소원과 사랑을 나누는 장면을 목격하게 된다. 그후부터 그동안 경미했던 신경쇠약이 발동, 이웃집 개를 죽인 것을 시작으로 끔찍한 일을 하나씩 벌여 나간다. 먼저 정숙하지 못한 아내를 병원으로 유인, 생 이를 다 뽑아버리고 풀장 청소원을 난도질해 죽이고 착각때문에 환자를 겁탈할뻔하고 아내의 부정과 관련이 있는 이웃집 여인의 이를 일부러 갈아 버린다. 끔찍한 사건은 거기서 그치지않고 자신의 실수를 눈치챈 병원 직원을 살해한 앨런은 세금포탈 약점을 잡고 돈을 요구하는 국세청 직원의 이빨까지 다 뽑아버리는데.
