Mining engineer Shigeru investigates the disappearance and death of his fellow coworkers when prehistoric nymphs are discovered emerging from the mines. After an attack on the local village, Shigeru heads deeper into the mines only to make a more horrifying discovery in the form a prehistoric flying creature. Soon a second monster appears as the two converge in Fukuoka.

Yakuza boss Furuya leans more and more on his protege Takao Shoji, though Shoji has become romantically involved with Furuya's mistress, Natsue. Furuya himself has fallen in love, with a nurse after his recent hospital stay. As the gang grows more jealous of the favoritism Furuya shows Shoji, they decide to reveal Shoji's relationship with Natsue. But Furuya's affection for Shoji cannot be easily destroyed, even in the gang war that erupts.

When a group of young geologists declares a mountainside marked for residential development unstable, they are met with scorn on two fronts. On one end, they must contend with the local villagers who balk at the prospect of relocation; on the other, they face the ambitions of the headstrong lumber baron, whose actions will only further destabilize the land. Their pleas for reason ignored, the scientists can do little but observe as nature runs its inevitable course.

동북 지방에 있는 어느 작은 도시의 점포에서 일하는 고등학생인 금곡육조(金谷六助)와 계란을 파는 여학생인 신자(新子)는 친한 친구가 된다. 또한 신자 앞으로 보내진 육조의 러브레터는 학생들 간에 물의를 일으킨다. 여선생 시마자키 유키코는 연애 문제에 있어서 의외로 낡은 사고 방식을 가지고 있는 학생들에게 두 학생간의 일을 알기 쉽게 설명한다. 그러나 그것은 오히려 다른 학생들의 반감을 살 뿐이었고, 교직원 간에서도 문제가 되어 일은 점차 커지게 된다. 그러나 본인인 신자와 육조는 아랑곳하지 않고 교제를 계속해 나간다. 하지만 둘의 일은 드디어 신문지상에까지 거론되어져 세간의 큰 화제가 되기에 이르는데...

전후의 일본, 한차례의 세력 다툼이 있은 후, 두목이 된 젊은 야쿠자가 알콜 중독자인 의사에게 치료를 받는다. 의사는 그 젊은이에게 결핵이라는 진단을 내리고 치료할 것을 권하며 곧 두 사람 사이에는 묘한 우정이 싹튼다. 하지만 얼마 후, 감옥에서 출소한 이전의 두목이 자신의 자리를 되찾으려 하면서 그 젊은 야쿠자는 곤경에 처하게 되는데...

쇼와 8년(1933년), 교토대학 학생 유키에는 법학부 야기하라 교수의 딸로 부족함 없는 생활을 누리고 있다. 아버지의 제자 중 신중하고 상식을 중시하는 이토카와와 정의를 위해 투쟁하고자 하는 노게. 유키에는 대조적인 두 사람 사이에서 흔들린다. 그러던 중 자유사상을 이유로 야기하라 교수가 탄압을 받게 되고, 노게는 좌익 운동을 하다 수감된다. 수년 후 검사가 된 이토카와의 청혼을 거절하고, 유키에는 노게를 찾아가 동거를 시작한다. 노게는 반전 운동을 하다 스파이 혐의로 체포되고, 감옥에서 고문을 당해 죽고 만다. 유키에는 노게의 유골을 안고 그의 고향으로 향한다.
